Today’s Lady News: Rick Santorum Used To Be Pro-Choice

Today's Lady News
  • Huffington Post has uncovered a December 1995 issue of Philadelphia Magzine, in which vehemently anti-abortion Sen. Rick Santorum said he was pro-choice. “I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress,” Santorum said. “But it had never been something I thought about.” You can read a scanned and highlighted image of the Philadelpha Magazine article, including Santorum’s explanation for why he changed his views, at the link. Rick Santorum, A Portrait In Porn

Look closely, my children. Closer. Even closer. This portrait of Rick Santorum is no ordinary portrait of Rick Santorum. For it is made of hundreds of pictures of gay porn. That’s right, it’s Rick Santorum fashioned from the fleshy penises and washboard abs of gay porn stars. Oh, how Santorum would shriek in horror if he knew.

The only good part about Republican politicians and their “Occupy Your Uterus” campaign is that it’s terrific fodder for political cartoonists. Case in point: cartoonist Matt Bors (who draws for places like the LA Times and the Village Voice) has doodled a bunch of pro-choice cartoons that actually made me chuckle about the day when us unwed wenches will have our hymens checked by the village wizard. Ugh, you’re the worst, Rick Santorum. [MattBors.com]

Okay, you’ve heard about how Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s name has also been associated with ”the frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex,” right? (Thank you, Dan Savage). So why, why, why would supposed Rick Santorum supporters create an ad in which mud — suspiciously resembling the aforementioned excrement — is shot at the candidate by a faux-looking Mitt Romney? I mean, the picture on the Spreading Santorum site exactly resembles the mud spatterings portrayed in the ad. Unreal. [Huffington Post]

“Sadly the propaganda campaign launched in the 1960s has taken root. The radical feminists succeeded in undermining the traditional family and convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness.”

This is a passage from GOP candidate Rick Santorum‘s 2005 book It Takes A Family; it seems like he’s suggesting women shouldn’t be in the workplace. When questioned this weekend by George Stephanopolous about this passage, Santorum said that it was his wife, Karen Santorum, who wrote that part — even though his name is the only one credited as an author and she isn’t credited in the acknowledgements as someone “who assisted me in the writing of this book.” When pressed this weekend, Rick Santorum said, “I don’t know — that’s a new quote for me … the bottom line is that people should have equal opportunity to rise in the work force.” I’m not even going to address how silly it is that someone is blaming his wife for a line in his book. Instead, let’s talk about how tone deaf this guy is about women in the workplace: poor women and women of color have pretty much always worked in America. It wasn’t a choice; it was a necessity. Apparently Rick Santorum — or his wife? — are just upset when middle-class white women go to work, too? [New York Times] Keep reading »

  • Oh, Rick Santorum, just shut up already! He told conservatives at the CPAC  conference today that insurers shouldn’t cover the cost of birth control because it “costs just a few dollars. Is that what insurance is for?” He continued, adding “Things that are not really things you need insurance for, and still forcing on something that is not a critical economic need, when you have an economic distress, where you would need insurance. But forcing them even more to do it for minor expenses.” Regardless of what your opinions on health care reform are, Rick Santorum is just WRONG. It’s not “just a few dollars.” It’s not a “minor expense.”  My birth control pills had a co-pay of $60 — that’s with insurance — so I stopped taking them because they were out of my budget. [Think Progress]

“I want to create every opportunity for women to be able to serve this country … but I do have concerns about women in front-line combat. I think that could be a very compromising situation, where people naturally may do things that may not be in the interest of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved. It already happens, of course, with the camaraderie of men in combat, but I think it would be even more unique if women were in combat. And I think that’s not in the best interests of men, women or the mission.”

Yesterday the Pentagon announced new rules that will open up 14,000 more positions for women in the military that put them closer to combat positions, like missile launcher crew members and tank mechanics. The new rules go into effect this summer. But Sen. Rick Santorum told CNN’s John King he’s not too sure us ladies would be able to handle combat roles because of “other types of emotions” getting in the way, whatever that means. Fear? Having a sadz because of our periods? Does it matter? Keep reading »

Rick Santorum talks to Piers Morgan
Watch Video
  • Rick Santorum visited Piers Morgan on Friday night and got to talking about abortion and everything he wants to do with your uterus. His cruel comments about how women who are pregnant as a result of rape — it’s a “gift” from God, y’all — are presented without comment (emphasis mine): “… [Y]ou can make the argument that if she doesn’t have this baby, if she kills her child, that that, too, could ruin her life. And this is not an easy choice. I understand that. As horrible as the way that that son or daughter and son was created, it still is her child. And whether she has that child or doesn’t, it will always be her child. And she will always know that. And so to embrace her and to love her and to support her and get her through this very difficult time, I’ve always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created — in the sense of rape — but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you. As you know, we have to, in lots of different aspects of our life. We have horrible things happen. I can’t think of anything more horrible. But, nevertheless, we have to make the best out of a bad situation.” [Think Progress]

Today’s Lady News: Rick Santorum Against Abortion, Unless It’s To Save His Own Wife’s Life

  • Interesting fact about Rick Santorum: his wife, Karen Santorum, had an abortion in 1996 during her 19th week of pregnancy (roughly the fifth month). Karen Santorum’s fetus caused an infection inside her and had to be removed to save her life. The fetus was delivered and could not survive outside the womb, as doctors had predicted. First of all, that is indescribably sad. It was brave for the couple to discuss this on NPR, as they did in 2004 with host Terry Gross. Second of all, how can Rick Santorum oppose all abortion in all cases when terminating a pregnancy saved the life of his own wife? Eh. Don’t answer that. [Jezebel]

  • Columbia and Yale will now reimburse LGBT employees who are taxed when their same-sex partners sign on to their health insurance. The schools are located in New York and Connecticut, respectively, which both recognize same-sex marriage. However, the federal government doesn’t recognize gay marriage and so lesbian and gay employees who are legally married are still taxed as “single.” [Queerty Keep reading »
