Anti-trafficking advocates, LGBT organizations, lawmakers and public health advocates have gathered in Albany, New York today to push for new legislation about condoms.  Yes, condoms.

Currently 39 million male condoms and two million female condoms are distributed for free in New York State. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, “Consistent and correct use of the male latex condom reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV transmission.” If used correctly, rubbers can also prevent unplanned pregnancies.

Yet having pockets full of  condoms could also lead to a potential prostitution arrest by law enforcement, or even be used as incriminating evidence by prosecutors in trial.  If trafficking victims, sex workers, LGBTQ persons and others are targeted by law enforcement, what is the incentive to have safe sex? I waited a few days to see if I was imagining the discomfort – and sometimes I thought I was. There were days when the pressure went away. Then it would return, and I would constantly feel like I had to urinate, throughout the day and night. I knew I had to see my gynecologist right away. Keep reading »

The Daily Squeeze: Online Shopping, Sticky Hair, And Rat Research

  • Men spend more money shopping online than women and are less likely to return items. Supposedly, men need to do things quickly because they value their time more. Or women just enjoy shopping and men see it as something that needs to get done before they can play Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

  • A 21-year-old woman has filed a $200,000 lawsuit against American Airlines, saying they failed to protect her after a male passenger moved to a seat next to hers and reportedly masturbated beside her. The woman awoke on the flight with “a substantial amount of an extremely sticky substance in her hair.” [AHN]
  • Low sperm count and some other issues associated with male fertility might be determined in the womb. In a study of rats, researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that the levels of male hormones in a mother’s womb may determine the future reproductive health of her offspring. [BBC]
