Planned Parenthood Believes It’s The Target Of A Sting Operation By Anti-Choicers

Planned Parenthood Federation of America clinics in 11 states have reported a string of suspicious incidents where women come in asking questions about sex-selective abortions, leading the organization to believe it’s being targeted with a “hoax” by an anti-abortion sting operation.

Women claiming to be pregnant came into clinics over two dozen times, asking provocative questions about sex-selective abortion, the Huffington Post reports. (Patient confidentiality prevents PPFA from identifying the clinics.) The women asked questions like how soon they could find out the gender of their fetus and whether they could schedule an abortion if they were expecting a girl. Keep reading »

Rick Santorum aborts his campaign

Not that I wanted Sen. Rick Santorum to continue his presidential campaign of caveman asshattery. But it doesn’t seem fair that he should get to just, you know, choose that choice for himself while women around the country are forced to wait up to 72 hours to make a decision about their own freakin’ uterus. Ashley Judd, Michelle Trachtenberg, and a couple other ladies have the best idea on how to fix this injustice: Rick Santorum should have a 72-day waiting period — and a healthy dose of “non-judgmental” lecturing — before he can abort his campaign. Rick, are you sure this is the right decision? Are you suuuure?  [Funny Or Die]

Senator Kristen Gillibrand gets the Girl, You’ve Got Bigger Stones Than Me Award of the week for going head-to-head on “Meet The Press” yesterday with none other than Rep. Michele Bachmann. (Rep. Bachmann, let me remind you, refers to emergency contraception as “the morning-after abortion pill” thus conflating it with abortion, suggests the HPV vaccine can make children become mentally retarded,  jokes about so-called “ex-gay” therapy and does not allow her daughters to ask boys on dates.) Somehow Sen. Gillibrand managed not to reach through the TV screens and shake her … even when Bachmann said Republicans want women to “make their own choices.”

Today’s Lady News: Arizona Bans Abortions After 20 Weeks

  • Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer signed a law yesterday which bans abortions after 20 weeks (rare to begin with), except in cases which risk of death or serious injury. The law also mandates an ultrasound 24 hours prior to having an abortion and requires state officials to create a website which shows fetal growth at various stages. [MSNBC]
  • The breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen For The Cure sent as many grants this year to Planned Parenthood affiliates as it has in the past. This comes despite a politically-motivated attempt earlier in the year by Komen to halt grants to PP, which caused great controversy. [Washington Post]

State Sen. Constance-Johnson photo

Nothing is quite so entertaining as people who don’t recognize their own hypocrisy, huh? Recently, our hero, Oklahoma State Sen. Constance Johnson (D), introduced an “Every Sperm Is Sacred” law to try to outlaw male masturbation. Legislators in OK have been concerned with banning abortion rights, including a “fetal personhood” amendment which would define a fertilized egg as a person, thereby criminalizing all abortion and IVF treatment.  So, Sen. Johnson thought politicians should turn their attention to all the poor little spermies being spanked out in the shower. ”If we’re taking about protecting life, then let’s talk about life at it’s very basic beginning,” she told “The Daily Show” last night. I was born out of wedlock in Minnesota, to a white mother and an Afghan (not the blanket, the country) father. It was considered pretty scandalous for my mom to be a single mother with a brown baby back in 1979 in Minnesota.

My mother had been with my father off and on for nearly seven years before I came along. Just before my conception, Mom had “escaped” down to South Carolina to stay with her sister after my father informed her that he was already in an arranged marriage with his 15-year-old cousin, who would be arriving soon from Afghanistan. My father’s family had arranged the marriage before relocating to the Unites States; apparently, they felt the need to bring tradition — the child bride tradition—along with them.

You can’t blame my father for wanting my mom for the time that he did, though, as his intended wife was a nine-year-old in Kabul when he met my mom at a Twin Cities bar in 1973, coincidentally the year Roe v. Wade was decided. Still, just before his teen wife was to arrive, my father drove all the way from Minnesota to South Carolina to conceive me in the back seat of his Camaro. Keep reading »

UPDATE, 1:40p.m.: Mother Jones is reporting the clinic is “temporarily closed” and the FBI has joined an investigation into the bombing. [Mother Jones]

An explosive blew up at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute, Wisconsin last night at around 7:30 p.m. Police say a homemade bomb was placed on a windowsill outside the Appleton North Health Clinic. It started a fire that burned itself out but still caused damage to the building. No one was hurt.

Intimidation tactics like this are nothing short of domestic terrorism, intent on scaring the employees of abortion clinics from doing their jobs. Thank you to the women and men who work at these clinics and put themselves at risk for clinic violence every day.

Today’s Lady News: Abortion Clinic Landlord Gets Revenge On Harassing Protestors

  • The landlord of an abortion clinic in Germantown, Maryland, is getting back at anti-abortion protesters who make harassing phone calls to him at home by taking down the phone numbers and distributing lists of them to pro-choice protesters who call these people back. According to the Washington Post, 3,000 people have volunteered to make calls, which has inspired the landlord, Todd Stave, to set a up group called Voice Of Choice to help other clinics whose employees are harassed by these extremists.  [Newser]
  • Latinas are the lowest paid group in the United States, earning on average 40 percent less than white, non-Hispanic men, according to a union for Latin American workers. [Fox News]
  • An anti-abortion group has filed a brief with Alabama’s Supreme Court urging them to test aborted fetuses for meth. The state has a “chemical endangerment of children” law which puts mothers behind bars if their liveborn babies test positive for drugs. However, if the state decides to test fetuses for meth as well, it could set a precedent for considering a fetus to be a fully-formed child. [Huffington Post] Keep reading »

We have nothing personally against the states of Arizona and Virginia, two fine locations in the lower 48. Arizona is home to the Grand Canyon, and our own Ami Angelowicz was born and raised there. Virginia is the proud state that brought us Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and the Smithfield ham. However, when it comes to those of us with a vagina, these two places have been the worst lately. Read on to vote in our Real March Madness poll! Keep reading »
