Theodore Wafer, the Michigan man who shot unarmed Black teenager Renisha McBride on his doorstep last year, has been sentenced to 17 to 30 years in prison for second-degree murder.

In November, 19-year-old McBride had gotten into a car accident and knocked on the door of Wafer’s Dearborn Heights home in the middle of the night. Wafer responded by shooting the teenager through a closed and locked screen door on his front porch, killing her. Wafer had initially claimed that his gun went off accidentally; he had also claimed he didn’t know the gun was loaded. Earlier this month, a jury rejected Wafer’s claim of self-defense and convicted him of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and one count of felony firearm. [Yahoo; MLive]

Last week, I found myself grateful for the conviction of Renisha McBride’s murderer, Theodore Wafer. This conviction did not bring back Renisha McBride. It did not atone for the miscarriage of justice that happened when George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin. It did not lay to rest my fears for my niece growing up in a country where Black girls and boys, men and women, are still fighting to see the completion of our ancestors dreams and hopes for equality.

But I was grateful.

I was grateful because I thought that this may be a step in the right direction — an inching towards our goal. I was still reeling from the death of Eric Garner in New York, still raw from the violence against Professor Ersula Ore, but this was a bright spot in the overwhelming despair. And then Saturday happened. Keep reading »

Prosecutors Charge Theodore Wafer, The Man Who Killed Renisha McBride, With 2nd Degree Murder

Perhaps there will be justice for Renisha McBride after all. Detroit prosecutors have officially decided to charge Theodore P. Wafer, 54 (above left), with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of 19-year-old McBride. The young women knocked on Wafer’s door the evening of November 2nd, likely looking for help after she allegedly got in a car wreck neary. Wafer claimed that he thought McBride, who is Black, was an intruder, and shot her in the face as she stood on his front porch. Wafer is also charged with possession of a firearm during the attempted commission of a felony or commission of a felony. Prosecutors say there was not enough evidence to back up Wafer’s claim of self-defense. [AP]
