Old-School Wednesdays: “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It”

It’s funny the little things we remember. Like, how I stayed home one day to memorize the lyrics to this song (I still know all of them). Or how I can’t watch this video for R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” without thinking about how my friend Rachel said she was going to marry the boy in the video one day. The adorable boy in the video, it turns out (thanks Google!), is Noah Ray, a scrawny kid from Athens, Georgia, who happened to be plucked from obscurity and made a video star. Michel Stipe Wants You to Wear A Cassette

Though Martin Margiela is a huge recluse, the brand is getting a very recognizable face, in the form of Michael Stipe from R.E.M. He’s designed a silver microcassette as a form of jewelry. But the really fun part with this is that he’s leaving it all up to the wearer. Fashion it like a necklace, use it on a headband, attach it to your shoelaces — it’s all up to your creativity. “The microcassette can not be defined as either a piece of jewelery or an art object,” a Margiela spokesperson said. “It’s both and neither at the same time. It can be worn or displayed in any way the wearer and owner desires.”

The Daily Squeeze: Workplace Romances, REM At Babeland, And The New Word For Lesbians

  • REM shot a video for the first single off their upcoming album at New York sex toy store Babeland. Wonder if they took home any goodies — a rubber ducky-shaped vibrator, perhaps? [Billboard.com]
  • Some lesbians would rather not be called lesbians. They would prefer being called “gayelle” (pronounced like Oprah’s friend Gayle’s name or a “gale” of wind). [DListed]
