Toni Braxton Thinks God Punished Her For Abortion By Giving Son Autism

“I was suddenly faced with a choice I’d never thought I’d have to make. Amid my major misgivings about abortion, I eventually made the gut-wrenching decision… In my heart, I believed I had taken a life — an action that I thought God might one day punish me for. … My initial rage was quickly followed by another strong emotion: guilt. I knew I’d taken a life… I believed God’s payback was to give my son autism.”

This is Tori Braxton in her new memoir, Unbreak My Heart … and yeah, it is pretty heartbreaking that she actually believed that God punishes people with autism. Kinda offensive to her own son, no?  Yet as the child of two pastors who grew up in an extremely strict, religious household, I suppose it’s not such a surprise that Braxton would create a sin/punishment scenario in her mind. In her memoir — which is quoted on RadarOnline — Braxton explained that years ago she discovered she was pregnant while on the acne medication Accutane, which can have negative side effects for women who are pregnant, specifically on her unborn fetus. So Braxton chose to have an abortion. But when she later had children with her now ex-husband, she learned her son Diezel had autism. I wish Braxton knew that, according to the Guttmacher Institute, roughly one in three women will have an abortion in her lifetime. If every woman who had an abortion later gave birth to a child with autism, there would be a lot more autistic people around. Oh, and that whole NO MEDICAL LINK thing. Minor detail. The Soapbox: Why Macklemore’s Costume Matters

SB-macklemore

Last Friday, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed a surprise music concert at the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle. Awesome, right? Only, because it was a surprise, Macklemore wanted to go a bit incognito and donned a costume. But the costume was anything but awesome. To me, and many others, the costume looked like a negative stereotype of a Jewish man.

For his part, Macklemore denies that he purposefully intended to mock Jewish people with his costume. Late yesterday, he took to Tumblr to issue an apology.

“My intention was to dress up and surprise the people at the show with a random costume and nothing more. Thus, it was surprising and disappointing that the images of a disguise were sensationalized leading to the immediate assertion that my costume was anti-Semetic. I acknowledge how the costume could, within a context of stereotyping, be ascribed to a Jewish caricature. I am here to say that it was absolutely not my intention, and unfortunately at the time I did not foresee the costume to be viewed in such regard. [...] I truly apologize to anybody that I may have offended.”

26 Italian Women Having Affairs With Priests Ask Pope To End Celibacy Vow

5 Insane Lessons From My Christian Fundamentalist Childhood

5 Lessons Learned From Christian Fundamentalist Childhood

My name is Hannah Ettinger, and I was raised in the Quiverfull movement. The term is taken from a verse in Proverbs, which says: “Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of arrows.” We interpreted this to mean: “Blessed is the man who dies with the most kids.”

In the Quiverfull movement, children are pretty much metaphorical weapons born to shoot a degenerate modern society in the face. I was one of nine children, and our family was just on the large end of “normal” in size. I was brought up to be just one more weapon in this terrible faith-based arsenal, but I didn’t quite hit the target. Here’s what I can tell you about being a weaponized offspring. True Story: I’m Planning My Bat Mitzvah And My Inter-Faith Wedding At The Same Time

True-Story--I'm-Planning-My-Bat-Mitzvah-And-My-Inter-Faith-Wedding-At-The-Same-Time

Six weeks ago, when I sat down with my Rabbi in anticipation of my upcoming Bat Mitzvah, I was most nervous to tell him that I was in love with a WASP—who happens to be the kind, caring person I’m marrying.

Before I could be officially accepted into the religious education program—which would consist of six sessions with Torah discussions, guest speakers, lots of falafel, one community service project, one full, 24-hour Shabbos, and the option for a (very reform) Bat Mitzvah (something I, while Jewish, had never had)—I had to get the Rabbi’s approval.  Keep reading »

Christian School Pressures 8-Year-Old Sunnie Kahle To Leave Because She Looks Too Much Like A Boy

We <3 Sunnie Just The Way She Is

Sunnie Is A Tomboy

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that some people who run “Christian” schools are actually enormous dicks.

Eight-year-old Sunnie Kahle is no longer a student at Timberlake Christian School in Lynchburg, Virginia, after administrators sent a letter home to her guardians complaining she doesn’t dress or behave “feminine” enough, like wearing pants with her school uniform. Her grandparents, who are her guardians, pulled Sunnie out of Timberlake and enrolled her in public school instead of forcing her to be someone she is not.

Sunnie is a tomboy with a big, infectious smile who wears short hair (she donated her longer hair to kids with cancer!) and comfy clothes like jeans and T-shirts to run around outside. But elementary principal Becky Bowman from Timberlake Christian School wrote in a letter to Sunnie’s grandparents that perhaps it’s “not the best place for her future education” if Sunnie can’t conform to the Biblically-based gender identity they dictate:

“You’re probably aware that Timberlake Christian School is a religious, Bible believing institution providing education in a distinctly Christian environment … We believe that unless Sunnie as well as her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education.” Keep reading »

Supreme Court Hears Arguments On Affordable Care Act’s Contraception Coverage

todays lady news

Today the Supreme Court heard challenges to the Affordable Care Act’s mandate to cover preventative care, which was filed by Christian owners of secular businesses who object to covering certain forms of birth control for their employees. Hobby Lobby claims their religious freedom is being violated and they should be exempt, like explicitly religious employers. There’s a whole lot to read about the subject and I’d like to thank commenter LR52185 for pointing us to a few of them:

The Soapbox: “Divergent” Is A Bible-Thumping Disaster

divergent soapbox

Spoilers ahead!

“Divergent,” which opens today, has been hailed as either the next “Hunger Games” or as a massive “Hunger Games” ripoff. It is both, but where it leaves its source material (“Harry Potter” included) is in the religious proselytizing throughout. Teenagers are born again in all YA fiction, in a sense. But in the Divergent books it is a specifically Christian moral imposition and major reason the series fails. Keep reading »

Guy Talk: Sex Isn’t A Commodity That Women Exchange

Why Don't Many Women "Charge More"?

“How do women decide to begin a sexual relationship? Pricing!”

The above video showed up in my Facebook feed the other night. It’s from a purported think tank, the Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture, which is actually a Christian think tank/advocacy group. The video claims to be a scientific look at the “Economics of Sex” based on the concept that men want sex for its own sake but women want sex for intimacy, security and, ultimately, marriage. Therefore sex is a “resource,” subject to supply and demand, which women control. “Men know that sex is cheap these days if they know where to look!” we are told. The video then implores women to dole out the supply of their resource to men (the “demand”) in exchange for other stuff. Essentially: ‘All sex is prostitution and women are prostitutes.’ Hello, Christian Right! Thought you were in there somewhere.

There’s so much in this video that makes me mad, I almost don’t know where to start: the fact that it’s a call to female solidarity drawn and directed entirely by men; the fact that they talk about women ‘policing women’s relationship interests’ when they mean slut shaming; the comparison of the birth control pill to chemical pesticides; the blazing heteronormativity. Smart women have already chimed in on this stuff, though, so I’ll focus on the completely bullshit notion that “men want sex more than women do.” I’m not saying this statement is untrue — I’m saying it’s utter nonsense to which no truth value can be assigned.
