After much trial and error, we’ve discovered that key to having a productive relationship with mom is knowing the proper way to respond to her — especially when she says things that get under your skin. And my God … she does that a lot. It’s much easier said than done though. When she calls to tell you that she started wearing thong underwear, it’s hard not to say “Ewww” and hang up. It’s instinctual. But it won’t get you anywhere. You need a game plan for these situations to keep your cool and keep mom happy. So, we’ve created a handy guide for responding to the most irritating/annoying/dumbfounding things your mother says. Keep reading »

How A “Man Cave” Can Strengthen Your Relationship

My husband’s birthday was the day after Valentine’s Day, so celebrating is a double whammy. Buying him gifts for the two holidays was tough because I like buying him sentimental things for Valentine’s Day and useful things for his birthday. He is a practical man; he enjoys working in the yard and fixing things in the house. I encourage this part of him because he has a stressful job and working on things seems to relax him. I had been bugging him since the holidays about what he wanted for his birthday, so the week before his birthday when he came to me with a big grin on his face pointing to a magazine telling me, “This is what I want,” I paid attention. It was inside a Prime Living Magazine, for which I write, where he found his dream gift: a “man cave” you could build at home.  Read more …

6 Totally Obvious Signs It’s A Great Relationship

You’re in love. Of that there is no doubt. The two of you are like peas and carrots together. There’s nothing you don’t love about the other (well, okay, his habit of putting the toilet paper roll on THE WRONG WAY is kinda annoying, but you know). You spend all the time you can together. You may even talk marriage.

So, what are the signs you’re (finally) in a healthy relationship? I’ll tell you.

1) You can be your true selves together. No longer do you have to pretend to love Chinese food or weird obscure foreign films — you’re totally happy saying, “You know what? I’m not into this” while knowing this won’t affect a thing between you.  Read more

10 Things You Should Never Say To A Guy

Dating is a topic that will never tire amongst girlfriends. Somehow there are always different scenarios and circumstances with new men that are the topic of most cocktail conversations.  As much as our mothers may deny it, we are in a whole different dating game. Today’s twenty-something woman can’t expect men to be beating down their door begging to take them out on a date. In today’s day and age, it is pretty normal for the female to make the first move. I recently wrote an article on how women should approach a guy that they are interested in. I then took that a step farther and gave a list of specific ways to break the ice based on your personality. Quirky? Shy? Smart? Anyone can play to their strengths and successfully spark up a conversation with a new prospect. Continuing with this theme, I thought it may be helpful to list out a few things that guys do NOT want to hear. Whether you’re meeting a guy for the first time or have been dating for a while, try to avoid these pitfalls if you don’t want to send him running in the opposite direction! Read more

I hate getting dumped. But I hate doing the dumping even more. I’ll take a breakup text any day of the week over having to send one. Not that I would EVER dump someone via text, even though I’ve been dumped that way. LAME. But I digress. I know how to deal with getting dumped. I have a lot of … experience, shall we say, as dumpee. Getting dumped is a piece of cake! You get angry. You get sad. You mutter expletives to yourself on the subway, listen to The Smiths non-stop for a week and think about how you really didn’t like the way he kissed anyway. Then you move on. Being the dumper is way, way trickier though. Why? Because it challenges your view of yourself as a good person. For a moment, you are forced be the asshole breaking someone’s heart. No way around it. it sucks. The guilt, the avoidance of that “asshole” feeling, has led me to perform some heinous dumpings. But I’ve learned from my mistakes. After the jump, some tips about how to end a relationship while remaining a decent human being. Keep reading »
