rihanna riri woo lipstick

So, you guys, this is basically my worst fear EVER: a woman says she got herpes from using a tester tube of lipstick! Starkeema Greenidge of Harlem attended a Rihanna concert earlier this month, where the makeup brand MAC was holding a popup shop and selling Rihanna’s new RiRi Woo lipstick. Like many a woman before her, Greenidge sauntered over to the tester tubes and tried the RiRi Woo lipstick on. An employee even told her to “press her lips together and spread the lipstick around.” And that’s when, according to Greenidge’s lawsuit against MAC, that she got HERPES. Two days after the Rihanna concert, a cold sore appeared on her lip, which her doctor diagnosed as oral herpes. Now she’s suing the company for not using a “fresh or new lipstick tube,” which is “unsanitary and exposing patrons to possible spread of disease.” Well now. Aren’t germs and possible diseases kinda the risk you run by testing communally-used makeup inside a store? MAC is not going to open a fresh lipstick for every single patron because that would be expensive and wasteful. They probably should either disinfect each lipstick or should wipe the top, used part of lipstick off before each new use. But I am a major germophobe and vigilant about wiping lipsticks whenever I test colors. Vigilance! It seems like the best defense of public grossness. Trust no one, Starkeema Greenidge. • Turkish Airlines has banned stewardesses from wearing red lipstick and nail polish, claiming bright makeup “impairs visual integrity.” Critics say the restriction is a sign the moderate Islamic country is becoming more conservative, in particular towards women’s sexuality. [Guardian UK]
  • According to the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Carl Levin (D-MI), there are over 70 sexual assaults involving military personnel every single day. This comes following the news that 26,000 service members had reported “unwanted sexual contact” in 2012, up from 19,000 the year before. In response, President Obama sharply rebuked those who are “betraying the uniform.”  [Yahoo, Salon]

Gwen Stefani And Prada Are Cool With Coloring Outside The (Lip) Lines

Awesome Orange-Reds
Can you guess which is $25 and which is $1? Read More »

I’m like a magpie as far as beauty products go — I’m drawn instinctively to anything bright, sparkly, bizarre, or beautiful — but when it comes to what I put on my own face, I’m an unlikely makeup classicist, and I most definitely stay inside the lines. At the S/S 2013 Prada show in Milan, models (like Jessica Stam, left) walking the runway sported fluorescent red lips that erred ever-so-slightly outside the natural barrier, resulting in an overall effect that’s more cartoonish than chic (wax lips, anybody? I ate a fair few in my day. Spoiler: they are disgusting). General consensus seems to be that this exaggerated lip look is best left to ’90s pop stars — like, say, Gwen Stefani, who showed off a similar shape at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. Frankly, I wouldn’t be caught dead in it. Would you?

Helmut Red Is An Oh-So-Appropriate Tribute To A Legend

Helmut Newton is inarguably one of the most prolific fashion photographers in history. His body of work, which during his life was a mainstay in high-end publications like Vogue Paris and Harper’s Bazaar, is instantly recognizable world-over. Nudity, overt sexualization, and erotic fetishistic subtexts stylized expressively in black and white are the hallmarks of a Helmut shot.

Beauty Talk: How To Rock Red Lips

Watch Video

It wasn’t until recently that I became confident enough to slick a red lipstick across my modest-sized mouth. But I felt instantly glam — and so will you! Here a bunch of handy video tutorials on how you too can brighten your kisser with a dose of red.

Virgin Atlantic Launches Its Own Lipstick (Yes, Really)

Any excuse for a new red lipstick is a good excuse, right? The airline Virgin Atlantic has debuted its own lipstick, Upper Class Red, in collaboration with actual makeup purveyors bareMinerals. Random! The color is modeled after Virgin uniforms and the airline’s “grooming manager” explained the lipstick’s blue undertones are universally flattering. Female flight attendants will be wearing Upper Class Red to work, while the rest of us can buy the $23 lippy through Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse Spas or the airline’s in-flight shopping magazine. Or we could just smooch a stewardess. [Telegraph UK]

Finally, A Red Lipstick For Modest Pouts

Sadly — and please, get your hankies ready because this is a tearjerker — I was born with no upper lip. My bottom lip is modest, but the top lip is so thin it’s practically non-existent. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always seen lipstick as something that would only draw attention to my miniscule pout. Oh, but I dreamed about wearing it, particularly in a glamourous shade of red! I thought it was not meant to be until one day, a tube of Charlotte Ronson’s Petite Kisses lipstick in “Fabiola” landed on my desk and I thought, Oh hell, might as well give it a try. And what do you know, it looked good. It’s not that it made my thin lips look like they were torn off Angelina Jolie’s face; no, the wine stain-esque color enhanced the shape of my lips which, until then, I hadn’t realize was quite lovely. I love this lipstick so much, I wear it every day now and am convinced the color would look amazing on everyone. Get it when you buy Ronson’s limited edition “Masquerade” set from Sephora, which also comes with another of her lipsticks in a brighter pink and an eye shadow palette.

7 Gorgeous Red Lipsticks & The Celebs Who Love Them

First things first: I never wear red lipstick. I have a fatal combination of lips with a tendency to chap and a complete destitution of desire to draw attention to myself, especially my damn face. I own a number of red lipsticks, all of which I have bought with the best intentions and a daydream of a new lease on life, but they collect dust in the back of a drawer somewhere. But I just read this article over on xoJane, and I’m totally inspired. It can be a real challenge to find the right shade for your skin tone, so I thought it would be in my best interest to take cues from the people who know best*: celebrities. Maybe even I can find my perfect red, thanks to the stars. Tell me your favorite in the comments!

* Probably not.

The Perfect Red Lip

Unlike the vast majority of fashion enthusiasts, I wouldn’t call myself a Chanel obsessor. Though I covet old photos of Coco with a string of pearls and a cigarette, I refuse to idolize a Nazi spy, and Karl Lagerfeld is about as pretentious and boring as the bouclé suits the line is famous for. Many young fashionistas love Chanel because they don’t know what else to love. Ladies, make yourselves aware of the other three, infinitely superior C’s: Céline, Chloé, and Cristóbal (Balenciaga, of course). Yes, Chanel is beautiful, timeless, and classic. Yes, it has been around for a long time. Yes, it was one of the first bold-faced names in fashion. But to me, these days, it’s little more than a symbol of a stodgier, simpler time. Keep reading »
