As far as Teen Idols go these days, I back Selena Gomez one hundred percent — Selener seems genuinely sweet and level-headed, especially amongst the venomous Taylor Swift types of the pop world. (Plus, she was in “Spring Breakers,” and you know how we feel about “Spring Breakers.”) She’s also consistently ace on the style front, historically favoring designers like Versace and Dolce & Gabbana for turnt up, va-va-voom glamour. But this busy Vera Wang frock, which Selena chose for the premiere of “Getaway,” just isn’t doing it for me. I’m all for a Japanese-inspired floral print, but there’s, like, five of them on this mini, and the retro black lace heels don’t do the rest of the look any favors. I can’t say I’m certain what she was going for here, but I definitely don’t think it’s workin’. What say you?
The MTV VMAs have come and gone, but our memories of the terrible outfits and criminally bad hair live on. We sat down with our friends over at Celebuzz and Vibe Vixen to dish on the best and worst looks of the night, and what exactly was up with Miley Cyrus’s hair. Take a look, and then tell us which looks you loved and hated in the comments.
We’re covering all the action at the MTV Video Music Awards tonight, and it all starts with the stars on the red carpet in front of the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. Stick with us tonight on Twitter — @TheFrisky — for all the latest. And check back here often for more amazing red carpet looks.
Stars, they’re just like us — except for the high-priced stylists, hair and makeup people they have on speed dial, that is. But what happens when you take away all of that — when celebs are caught out and about, unaware that their every move is being recorded by a discerning paparazzi camera?
Take Lily Collins. Collins is lucky enough to have a stupidly gorgeous face. I mean, look at those eyebrows! She could wear a trash bag and a pair of Crocs and still manage to look good. So when she’s all dolled up for special events — like say, promoting her new movie, “The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones” at ComicCon, well, her charm is undeniable.

Not sure if I love this unique patchwork dress or am just really excited to see Miley taking a break from her basketball jersey and thigh-high boots uniform (probably both), but I’m giving this look a big thumbs up. Miley was on the red carpet with fiance Liam Hemsworth (side note: didn’t they break up? No? I thought they did?) at the premiere of his new movie, “Paranoia.” Depending on which tabloid you read, the two were either acting like giddy schoolgirls in love, or angry strangers who barely acknowledged each other’s existence. So, there you go. [Photo: Splash News]
Sorry, Brad, but my interest in “World War Z” would best be described as minimal to nonexistent. My interest in the gorgeous Angelina Jolie, however, regardless of the occasion, is totally tops. Seriously, Angelina should just be strategically placed in every single movie. Box office numbers would soar. I paid money to see “The Tourist,” for fuck’s sake.
Sienna Miller took a spotlight sabbatical for a few years there (but not before blessing the popular world with the ubiquitous plague that was “boho,” of course), birthing out a human, getting engaged to total ponytail babe Tom Sturridge, etcetera. But now she’s ba-ack, and you know what? Girlfriend looks hotter than ever. She even showed up at the Golden Globes earlier this year looking crazy radiant and then was like, “I’m really not wearing any makeup,” and we actually kind of believed her. Now, she’s definitely got some makeup going on here, along with a gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana floral frock, but seeing Sienna back and at it reminds us why we liked her so much in the first place… and it was not the boho wardrobe. Not even close. [Photo: WENN]
Cate Blanchett sure ain’t afraid of no freaky fashion, but what’s really almost miraculous about it is that, even at her strangest, the esteemed actress is very rarely a sartorial flop. This Balenciaga cape-over-frock look, for example? My initial reaction is to be like, “god, that’s weird,” but the longer I look at it, the more I’m convinced that Cate can take even the weirdest silhouette and turn it into something really, really convincing.
Blake Lively sure loves being famous, so I can’t imagine why we haven’t been seeing her out and about lately. Does Ryan Reynolds keep her locked in his basement or something? Do we have a hostage situation on our hands? Regardless, Blake’s captor let her out for the Very Important occasion of the “Turbo” premiere in New York. (Do I know what “Turbo” is, or what it is about? No. Will I deign to Google it? Also no.) I can’t always get down with Blake’s style (Serena van der Woodsen’s, on the other hand…), because she always looks like she’s trying just a little too hard to be, like, fashion-y and interesting and avant-garde, but I actually love this svelte, sexy Burberry look on her. Well done, Blakester.
I do not dare to wear my glasses out of the privacy of my bedroom, let alone out in public, and never in mixed company, so I have to applaud Rashida Jones for her bravery in sporting her frames on the red carpet at the opening of Carolina Herrera’s new Rodeo Drive boutique. Leave it to sweet, beautiful Ann to pair her practical specs with her fashion event formalwear and look great while doing so! [Photo: WENN]
