The 2013 Cannes Film Festival: Misses

The 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival began last week. Cannes is one of the biggest film festivals in the world, important not just because it manages to attract so many famous faces to one place, but because it’s where so many important film distribution and ownership deals go down. But who cares about that? The main thing is the glorious huge red carpet where celebs pose at premieres in some pretty intense outfits. All this week, we’ll be updating this gallery, to share some of the worst red carpet moments. Check out this gallery to see some of the most egregious fashion faux pas.

The 2013 Met Costume Institute Ball: Hits

We could get into the atrocious politics, the end-of-culture-ness that having a Costume Institute Ball themed around punk entails. We could talk about how political punk icons like Joe Strummer and the dudes from Crass would be appalled by such a blatant cultural misappropriation. About how the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibition at the Met actually created a replica of the fucking disgusting bathroom at long-dead punk club CBGBs (which has ironically been replaced by a John Varvatos clothing store). Or about how the attendees at last night’s Met Ball — despite their safety pin appliques, dyed hair, spiked heels and studs – had no clue about punk’s tenets, beyond the obvious and cliche aesthetic signposts.

We could talk about all of those things ad nauseum, because the misappropriation of punk — the turning of punk into little more than a fashion statement — is simply another symptom of how capitalist culture dilutes, chews up and swallows cultural movements and distills them into non-threatening, easily commodifiable shadows of their former selves. But hey, let’s just look at the clothes instead.

Hits, Misses & Superlatives At The 2013 MTV Movie Awards

Last night was the MTV Movie Awards, which I didn’t watch because I am an adult. But I did hear that Taylor Lautner beat out Channing Tatum for Best Shirtless Moment, so I think that just about sums about how seriously this particular award show should be taken by those of us who consider filmmaking an art form. I mean, really. In what world? Anyhoo, let’s review who was there and what they wore with a round of Hits, Misses and Superlatives!

Hits & Misses At The American Country Music Awards

The American Country Music Awards were held Sunday evening, and we imagine anybody who loves country music at all was busily flipping between the ACMs and “Mad Men” all night. Country music’s finest — along with some random famous country fans like Kaley Cuoco and Dog the Bounty Hunter — showed up for the festivities, and most (most!) of them wore some pretty lovely gowns. But it wouldn’t be a country music awards show without somebody going a little overboard with the rhinestones, feathers or sparkle. Click through to see last night’s fashion winners and losers.

The Good, The Bad, The WTF: The “Spring Breakers” LA Premiere

Imagine the shitshow it must be to be married to Harmony Korine. I’ve disliked his work (aside from this awesome Proenza Schouler campaign video) since “Gummo,” which I found to be extremely exploitative and revolting. That said, this new Korine work, “Spring Breakers,” is getting fairly good reviews across the board. Assholes like it. Non-assholes like it. I may give it a chance, but like, an “on demand” or “Netflix” chance, not a spend-$14-on-a-ticket chance. Thursday night, Korine and his actor pals gathered at Cinespace for the film’s Los Angeles premiere. But you know what? Considering this is their home turf, most of the actresses — barring Selena Gomez — didn’t really bring their A-game. Disagree with me? Share your thoughts in the comments!

…And Now Here’s Every Other Star Who Attended Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party

I’m gonna give it to your straight: if you didn’t get invited to Vanity Fair‘s infamous Oscar party, you’re probably a sad, pathetic commoner like me. Practically everyone in Hollywood was there, though I chose to only feature those who didn’t attend the awards or who changed into a pretty new frock for the party. And by the way, as much as we loved so many of the dresses on the Oscar red carpet, the dresses at Vanity Fair party put those to shame. Ah-mazing.

Academy Awards 2013: The Best Of The Rest

So many Oscars gowns, so little time! This year, for a change, virtually everyone looked smashing. Hollywood was struck by the good taste stick for once — and we’ve culled more than a dozen of our favorite red carpet moments from the 2013 Academy Awards. Click through to see all the glitz, glamour and (actually tasteful!) gowns.

The Worst Dressed At The 2013 Academy Awards

This year’s Academy Awards were rather exceptional — no, not because of Anne Hathaway’s annoyingly breathless acceptance speech — but because there were relatively few fashion missteps on the red carpet. Even Helena Bonham-Carter, a reliable style weirdo, managed to reign in her batcrackers look just a tad. So while these looks technically fall in the “worst dressed” category, we’d probably take any of these gowns over some of the crappy looks you might catch at the Grammys or the MTV Awards.

Academy Awards 2013: 7 Rhapsodies In Blue

Hollywood’s biggest stars absolutely looked their best at last night’s Academy Awards — so much so that we had a difficult time finding much we didn’t like. So for the most part, we’re going to focus on what we loved. We already showed you those wearing stunning sequins and princess gowns — and here are seven women (and men!) who opted for beautiful blues.
