Every year, actors and actresses head across the ocean to France for the Cannes Film Festival, a week of press events, red carpet moments, and yacht parties. While some people will focus on the actual movies, it’s really the fashion choices that are most important. Let’s break this down. When actresses all show up to promote their latest films, designers have a major opportunity, because between all the press conferences and red carpet premieres, each star will be photographed countless times. Designers petition stylists to dress celebrity clients, and if their creations are spotted (and loved) on a Cannes red carpet, the label gets a major publicity boost. Much like how Academy Awards and Golden Globes dresses are rehashed for years to come, thousands of images of the gowns worn during the Cannes Film Festival will run in tabloids, magazines, fashion blogs, and celebrity gossip sites for the next few months, resulting in eyes all over the world ogling a designer’s creation. Sometimes we feel like Us Weekly‘s “The Fashion Police” and other similar style critics can be a tad harsh. Also, they tend to have these really boring, conservative styles and we have to wonder what their real fashion credentials are. (Case in point: US Weekly‘s “Top Cops” include random comedian Stefanie Novik and Chet Cannon of “The Real World, Brooklyn.” When did they ever go to design school!?)
