Deciding to make a drastic hair color change is quite a daunting task, but figuring out how to adjust your makeup look can be even worse, especially if you’re going from dirty blond to Sara Rue red. Such is the dilemma of reader Rachel, who sent us a beauty distress mayday recently. You see, Rachel is worried about clashing her lip and eye colors with her new dark red hair, but she needn’t worry because TF has her covered. First off, let us congratulate Rachel for having the guts to go from one hair color extreme to another. Let us also say that we would never criticize or caution against wearing any color of eyeshadow, lipstick, or blush regardless of hair color. Makeup is supposed to be fun, right?! Redheads, The Most Maligned Minority Group Ever?

Hey, remember the other day when I posted about that Christmas card that was pulled from the shelves at stores in England because a few redheads found it offensive? Well, Jane Asher, an English actress who once dated Paul McCartney for five years in the ’60s and inspired many of his songs with the Beatles, wrote a hilarious essay for the UK’s Daily Mail today discussing the plight of the redhead. She writes:

“Those of you lesser mortals, with so-called ‘ordinary’ or ‘normal’ hair colouring, have no idea of the torments and prejudice that we of the redhead gene have to undergo on a regular basis.”

I was born a redhead, but these days when people ask if my hair is natural I’m not sure the honest answer is still ‘yes.’ I started dying it shortly before my thirtieth birthday when my once fiery locks began fading a sort of washed-out auburn shade. At first, I was in denial about this sad sign of aging. I convinced myself it was seasonal, as my hair always darkened a bit in the winter, but when summer rolled around and my hair was still drab, I had to face the fact that youth wasn’t the only thing time was robbing me of; it was also trying to steal my identity.

1. Never pick a color that looks or sounds fake, like “Cherry Bomb.” Pick colors that are soft and natural.

2. Make sure you change your makeup; going red means making the necessary adjustments to your makeup!

3. As a redhead, it is also important to wear clothes that compliment your hair color. Fiery hair requires less details on clothing, you’re already making a bold statement with that color!
