It’s always bittersweet when New York Fashion Week comes to a close. On one hand, editors and Fashion People citywide breathe a sigh of relief (not to mention regular people who just so happen to live near Lincoln Center); on the other hand, it significantly diminishes your chances of stealing a glimpse at Carine Roitfeld on 64th Street or spotting Karlie Kloss on the subway. Oh well, there’s always next season… or London, starting tomorrow. Finishing off NYFW Autumn/Winter 2013, we’ve got Naeem Khan, Oscar de la Renta, J. Today in Things That Aren’t Cute: these uniforms Ralph Lauren designed for the U.S. Olympic Team. Blazers, berets, knee-length skirts — the company’s statement says the outfits aim to “embody the spirit of American athleticism and sportsmanship,” but I think they’re more “Phillips Exeter Academy, sailing, affected accents from a place that doesn’t exist, that kid you know named John Charles Johnson III, your mom’s Valium in the mirrored bathroom cabinet, and things that do not and will never genuinely define America as a whole unless, of course, you happen to be asking Ralph Lauren.” I grew up in Connecticut. I know this shit.
“You can’t drive a painting … I drive these cars — they don’t just sit here.”
– Ralph Lauren shows off his collection of vintage cars to Vanity Fair. Lauren’s two-floor garage houses Ferraris from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’90s, Porsches, Aston Martins, Morgans, Jaguars, “a 1938 Bugatti coupe, a 1938 Alfa Romeo Mille Miglia roadster, and the world’s only 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK “Count Trossi” roadster.” [Racked] Keep reading »
Ralph Lauren has his own breast cancer foundation called the Pink Pony Fund. To raise money during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, he’s holding an enormous auction of luxury goods, getaways, and experiences. You wouldn’t believe some of the stuff you can bid on! Internships at top magazines! Dinners with celebs! Walk-on roles on TV shows! Nothing comes cheap (it is in the name of charity, mind you), and most of the items up for bid run well into the thousands of dollars. After the jump, check out some of the more extravagant ones and see what people are willing to pay for them! [charitybuzz] Keep reading »
Remember when we got all hot and bothered about the idea that overalls were coming back after spotting them in various spring collections? Well, our worst fears have come to pass, as Jessica Biel is sporting a pair of Ralph Lauren’s farm chic denim in the February issue of Vogue. (Oh well, at least they’re more comfy than, say, corsets.) A few more shots from the cover shoot, after the jump. [Vogue] Keep reading »
