I’ve had a difficult time keeping my lips moist and smooth, despite using Neosporin Lip Health religiously. I know it’s become colder lately, but I didn’t think that was the only culprit. Then, it occurred to me that my benzoyl peroxide facial cleanser was probably sucking all the moisture out of my lips, leaving them dry and cracked. Quick Tip Of The Day: Acidophilus Is Key To Being A Healthy Woman

I went to the gyno yesterday and learned something very interesting. Acidophilus, a probiotic that helps promote healthy bacteria in the body, is not only important for good digestion, but it is also very good for preventing yeast infections. While yeast infections can happen at any time of the year for many different reasons, they’re extremely prevalent in the summer because of the heat and frequent sweating in the lower region. Birth control pills and antibiotics are also known to be popular causes of what Amelia likes to call “the crotch monkeys.” In order to prevent the yeastie beasties, my doctor suggested that I ingest a live culture acidophilus capsule once daily. He also said that if I am going swimming, will be in very hot and sweaty conditions, or if I need to take antibiotics, then I should insert one capsule vaginally at nighttime to promote healthy bacteria in my body. Quick Tip Of The Day: How To Get An Aisle And A Window Seat On A Coach Bus

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and it’s time to get away. Traveling by bus is easy and cheap, but those seats can be pretty cramped. One seat is hardly enough for one person, so I often employ this trick I learned back in college to make sure the seat next to mine empty. Arrive earlier than your departure time, so you can be in front of the other passengers. Once you board the bus, grab a seat near the front. Stick a bag under or in front of the window seat. Then, sit in the aisle seat. As the other passengers board, they’ll assume you have a companion and that there are more empty seats in the back. This is quite a deceptive trick, but trust me, there are some true weirdos who ride coach buses, and you don’t want to start your trip off badly. Keep reading »

Quick Tip Of The Day: How To Extend A Waistband Without Any Sewing

I’ve gained an inch or two in the waist since purchasing one of my favorite skirts this past fall. (Here’s a pic of the skirt.) There’s no room to let the waistband out a little, so I’d given up wearing it until I lost the extra meat. But today I really wanted to put it on, and I thought there had to be a creative way to overcome the too-small obstacle. And there was! I’ve seen button extenders before, but I don’t think they’re necessary. All you really need is a rubber band and a cute belt.

Loop one end of the rubber band around the button and push the other end through the buttonhole. Then, loop that same end around the button. Now, cover the waistband with a belt. No one else will know your skirt or pants don’t fit perfectly. Keep reading »

Ants have a really annoying habit of seeking refuge from the sun’s heat in the homes of humans. While some people might find it therapeutic or fun to completely decimate an invading colony of ants with a can of Raid, dealing with the situation that way isn’t very eco-friendly and discarding ant carcasses surely isn’t pleasurable. Instead, stop the ants from coming into your home with the help of a fruit. Ants hate cucumbers, so put slices on wax paper near cracks, crevices, and other areas where the insects might sneak into your home. Quick Tip Of The Day: How To Ease Nasal Allergy Pain

It’s the same story every year. The gray winter skies part, the sun shines, the flowers bloom, and the pollen flies. Allergy season is the worst! Even if you’re able to stop the constant nose dripping, watery eyes, and itchy throat, how do you soothe the pain? I’ve adopted this home remedy to alleviate the burning that often comes with allergies and all you need are a few things for relief: water, lavender oil, a pot, and a stove. First, boil a pot of water. When it comes to a boil, add a few drops of the lavender oil. Turn off the stove, so you don’t set anything on fire, and be sure to brace yourself on something stable though because you don’t want to dive face-first into boiled water. Then, just bend your head over the pot and inhale. You can place a towel over your head to hold in the steam, but it’s not necessary. You’ll start to feel better instantly, but you can repeat these steps a few times a day. Keep reading »

Quick Tip Of The Day: Chop Red Chilis Without Setting Your Skin And Orifices On Fire

Last night, in anticipation of “The Bachelor” season finale, I decided to make up a chili recipe! The Twitter feed above details what happened as a result of chopping red chilis without gloves. That’s Tip #1a: Wear gloves. But if you are a moron like me and you don’t wear gloves, I learned a couple handy tricks for getting the chili oil off your hands — soap and water does not work — and alleviating the sting of chili burn. To get chili oil off your hands, rinse them in olive oil — apparently, chili oil dissolves in fat. To relieve the sting, rub a little lemon juice anywhere you’re burning (except, duh, your eyes). Quick Tip Of The Day: How To Write A Thank-You Note In 3 Minutes

Writing a thank-you note can be a daunting task, but you only have to remember the rule of three. You have three days to send the card without seeming rude or forgetful. It should only take three minutes to write your message of three lines. Greet the recipient by name, obvi. You should thank them for the exact item you received, but if they gave you cash, don’t state the amount. Simply write: “Thank you for your generosity.” And if the gift is intangible, say, they let you stay at their country home, then write: “Thank you for your hospitality.” The second line should explain how you plan to use the gift. The third line is your opportunity to express your appreciation for seeing or hearing from the giver and that you hope your paths will cross again soon or they’re in your thoughts. Simple, right? When the temperature gets down below 30, all attempts at looking good go out the window. I put tights under my jeans, layer three pairs of socks, and wear a knit hat that messes up my hair. One of the bad things about layering is that putting a thick, long-sleeved sweater under a coat can result in that awful, stuffed-sausage feeling and an inability to move your arms the way you normally do.
