Kate Spade “Tarrytown Stella” Shoulder Bag

We’ve always wanted a tiny handbag which would look good while bludgeoning purse-snatchers! (So what if identity theft is more en vogue than purse-snatching? Minor detail.) Behold this Miss Piggy pink-colored, leather shoulder bag, which should do the trick. At the very least, the next time we’re annoyed at our guy, can envision ourselves swinging this femme-y Kate Spade purse behind us as we stalk off in a huff. [$147, Bluefly] Keep reading »

Etienne Aigner Re-Releases Bags From The ’60s And ’70s

Back in the days before Marc Jacobs, Botkier, and Foley + Corinna, the handbag label to carry was Etienne Aigner. The company’s namesake apprenticed for Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga before he started making belts out of his apartment in a single shade of burgundy leather because, as a young designer, he decided it would be cheaper to work in one color. The line grew from belts to other accessories, and the deep reddish leather became the brand’s signature. Aigner died in 2002, but his brand has lived on, sometimes following trends we haven’t been fans of. But now, to celebrate the company’s 60th anniversary, a handful of handbags designed in the ’60s and ’70s have been re-released, and they’re gorgeous. Since my mom didn’t save any of her bags for me, I’m going to buy one (they’re all under $200) and pretend it’s vintage, but — bonus! — it won’t have that funky thrift store smell. Skull Purses: Love It Or Hate It?

Sure, you’ve got a lot floating around inside your head: the boyfriend, the job, the what-the-hell-am-I-going-to-wear-tomorrow. Now, you can stuff everything into your skull — literally. Belgian designer Natalia Brilli, who toiled under Oliver Theyskens making accessories at Rochas, created this unique line of handbags that are in the shape of human noggins. Like Theyskens, Brilli’s taste leans towards the gothic; hence, the accessories’ macabre affect. Although, she’s brought these cranium clutches up to date in silver, purple, and black. Previously, Brilli’s odd works have included a leather-covered skateboard and a leather-covered watch. These, ah, headbags, though, give her collection a more, well, human touch. Do you love ‘em or hate ‘em? [Pipeline] Keep reading »

Haute Germs: Are Handbags Making Us Sick?

With all the recent swine flu hoopla, even the most hygienically-lax of us have begun giving second thoughts to our cleanliness—soaping up for at least fifteen seconds, coughing into our elbows, and using antibacterial gel every time we enter a new room. There are endless opportunities to sterilize and re-sterilize, and it seems that we intend to use all of them as often as humanly possible. We’re nothing if not clean at this point, right? Well, true for our hands, but what about one of those other appendages women use just as much—our purse? Keep reading »

Lulu Guinness Creates The First Moving Handbag

Lulu Guinness wanted to make sure her 20th anniversary as a designer was special, so she established the Lulu Guinness Scholarship to help young designers explore a career of accessory design at the London College of Fashion. And she created, with the help of Adam Wright, the first animatronic, or moving, handbag. The birdcage handbag contains a mechanical bird that actually moves and sings, yet is large enough to fit a lipstick and a stash of cash. Wright has also worked with Tim Burton and created the famous animatronic catwalks for designer Hussein Chalayan. The handbag won’t be mass produced, which is kind of a good thing because all that tweet-tweeting would get annoying after a while. But to hear Guinness passionately discuss the making of it in the video above makes me want to see the purse in person. [Dazed Digital]

Rolls-Royce Adds Girly Feature To New Concept Car

We’re not sure whether to be insulted or overjoyed by Rolls-Royce’s new concept car. The 200EX features a backseat pop-out purse holder that senses when you put down a bag and holds it in place. We hate that the car company thinks women are all about handbags, but, you know what, we are. (In fact, we were just drooling over Marc by Marc Jacobs’ new bags.) It would be nice to be able to make sharp turns without have our handbag tumble to the floor, spewing tubes of lipstick everywhere. And, if you’re driving a Rolls, you probably have a super-nice purse that you’d want to preserve. Our bag on the other hand, cost $15 on eBay. [Luxuo] Keep reading »

The Keybag

Writing an email, text, or memoir aren’t the only things you can do with a keyboard. You can let one hold all your junk and accessorize your outfit. That is, if you have a Keybag designed by João Sabino. Each Keybag is made from 393 keys or key fragments arranged in a random, unique order so that it becomes its own communication vehicle. Available in red, pink, black, and white, no tech-savvy fashionista or writer should be without one. [JoaoSabino.pt via Fashion Indie] Keep reading »

Would You Carry This Flower Bag?

Hoping that her purses will encourage women to “engage with nature,” designer Kathleen Dustin has created a number of flora-inspired handbags, including this, um, ultra-feminine number with peak-a-boo dyed pearls, which is on sale for $800. “I am often also asked, ‘Why purses?’” Kathleen writes on her website, “’Why don´t you make figurines or sculptures?’ The reason is because a figurine or sculpture just sits there collecting dust. You aren´t supposed to touch it. But because these purses are functional, you are supposed to touch them, caress them and examine them.’” So the question is: Would you pay $800 to touch, caress, and examine this functional work of art? After the jump, check out more of her purses. [via Metro.co.uk] Keep reading »

Style On The Street: Across Marks The Spot

Now that it’s getting a wee bit warmer, you can stop piling on layers of sweaters and coats and finally show the world the cute clothes you’ve got on underneath. We think spring is an excellent time to change purses, as well. While you probably wouldn’t want to wear a cross-body handbag over a puffy down jacket, they look especially good when paired with a button-down shirt and short skirts or a pair of shorts. Crave: Big Buddha Tyler Tote

You wouldn’t think an episode of A&E’s Intervention would be the place to get style inspiration, but then, there’s never been an Allison. The subject of the show’s recent “huffing” episode carried a seriously awesome bag, and we’ve found it! The tote comes in red, gunmetal, black, and camel. So now you too can emulate the style of a woman who inhales computer duster, without, you know, actually turning your brain into JELL-O. [Amazon.com] Keep reading »
