As an obsessive dog owner, it can be easy for me to forget that there are other creatures people keep as pets and love as much as I love Lucca. I was reminded of this yesterday, when I posted a link to the Puppy Bowl X gallery to FB and a friend, who happens to be a cat lover, reminded me that puppies are not the only stars of the Puppy Bowl. “Everyone knows that the Kitten Halftime Show is the real draw,” he said. Now, I don’t want to pit puppies and kittens against each other here, as there’s more than enough room for all kinds of cuteness in this world. So let’s give the Puppy Bowl kittens their due!
They’re really stepping up their game for Puppy Bowl X. There won’t be a mass wedding officiated by Queen Latifah (as far as I know), but there will be aerial coverage done by some sort of fluffy rodents, penguin cheerleaders and a half-time performance by Keyboard Cat!
You can check out the in this gallery and pick your favorite pooches. I feel like Alvin the Poodle has that MCP (Most Cuddlable Puppy) look about him. I guess we’ll just have to wait until game day and see who takes the title. Check out a preview of all the growling, scampering and sportsmanship ahead, after the jump! [Animal Planet] Keep reading »
The Puppy Bowl is cool and all, but there’s only so long I can watch a bunch of dogs tumbling around before I’m like, “Where them kittens at?” The Hallmark Channel must have heard my plaintive brays, because they confirmed that they will be staging a Kitten Bowl come Super Bowl Sunday 2014. (Also, they announced this back in April, but I must have missed it so I’m going to go ahead and assume you did too.) The network has just announced that Beth Stern (that’s Howard’s wife) will host, Yankees radio announcer John Sterling will give the play-by-play, and — this is the best part — the festivities, featuring 60 to 70 kittens, will run from noon to 9 p.m. It’s perfect, because watching kittens on television is literally the only thing I could feasibly enjoy doing for nine hours straight. The Super Bowl is this weekend, which is whatever — what really matters is that the Puppy Bowl will also be on! The Puppy Bowl runs concurrent with ye olde Superbowl, and is a furry, adorable alternative full of frolicking puppies, fuzzy kittens and–for the first time–cheerleading hedgehogs. And the lucky man in the center of it all? Dan Schachner, the Puppy Bowl referee and the guy with the most enviable job in sports. We wanted to delve deeper into Dan’s world and find out what makes him tick. Read our informative guide to Dan Schachner and the Puppy Bowl, after the jump!

Now in its ninth year, the Puppy Bowl is the soft cuddly alternative to the Super Bowl. And thank God. We wait in anticipation for the Bowl to begin each year, and enjoy the puppies frolicking and running around so much.
It’s not all fun and barks, either. “The puppy players viewed me more as fresh meat than a ref last year,” explains returning referee Dan Schachner. “It took a few hard-hitting plays for them to realize their overwhelming cuteness and basset hound eyes wouldn’t affect my judgment to fairly officiate this game.” (Animal Planet, if you ever need a new Puppy Bowl ref, let me know!)
This year, we’re excited to reveal that the Puppy Bowl will now include … drumroll please … hedgehog cheerleaders! And while we don’ have any photos of the ‘hogs in their outfits yet, I’ve created an artistic rendering of what they might look like, above. Now, don’t forget to watch Puppy Bowl IX on Animal Planet starting at 3 p.m. EST on Feb. 3, ya hear? [MNN]
There’s one reason and one reason only that I actually get excited for the Super Bowl each year … no, not the promise of taut man asses you can bounce a quarter off of — the Puppy Bowl! Animal Planet holds their epic puppy playtime extravaganza every Super Bowl Sunday and it’s always incredibly squee-worthy — and they’ve finally released the starting lineup of pawed players. Ravens versus 40ers? Pshaw! It’s all about Biscuit versus Fitz! Hmm, or Tuck versus Trinket. Now, I usually root the dogs which most resemble my girl Lucca, but truth be told, I wouldn’t kick any of these cuties out of bed for biting my toes. Click on through and tell us who your faves are!
