My feelings on James Franco are well known, and I’m aware that some of you think that when it comes to JFrancs, I’m just some intolerant harpy, shaking my first in the air and cursing the various venerable degree-granting institutions he attends. If that’s how you feel, no hard feelings, skip ahead to the next post. The rest of us? We need to talk about something. James Franco is now trying to remake “Psycho.” With himself as Janet Lee.

Franco’s Psycho Nacirama is on view right now at London’s Pace Gallery, but just in case you can’t go, here’s an essay Franco wrote about it. His closing words say it all: “What’s my motivation? According to prominent horror critics, the things that scare us as a culture usually have a lot to do with whatever we repress and suppress. Horror is about the thin boundary between the outside and the inside being broken — both literally, as in the piercing of skin, and metaphorically, as in the destruction of innocence or psychological disillusionment.

Horror is also a very individual thing, and what scares some of us has no impact on others. For me, it’s tight, small, cramped spaces — there’s probably some psychoanalytic Freudian reason for that, but I’m afraid to look too deep. But for others, it’s aliens, or disease outbreak, or serial killers, or kittens (I don’t judge). What scares us does in some ways define us.

The Adorable Kid From “Charlie & The Chocolate Factory” Is Going To Play Norman Bates

Freddie Highmore, whose adorable mug you may remember from “Finding Neverland” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” has just secured a role in A&E’s “Psycho” prequel. The actor will be playing Norman Bates.

We previously heard not only was this prequel, called ”Bates Motel,” actually happening, but they were already far into the casting stage. Vera Farmiga is set to play Norman’s mother, Norma, in the series. Read more…
