Writer Melanie Berliet wanted to take the plunge, quit her day job, and pursue freelance writing full-time. No steady paycheck, no health insurance, no safety net. So Berliet joined SeekingArrangements.com, a site which pairs young, female 20-something “sugar babies” with rich, older, male “sugar daddies” for a relationship based on gifts, including luxury items and cash. By stipulating the bling or Benjamins are gifts, the site technically doesn’t promote prostitution. Although Berliet said she was concerned about “walking the line between dating and prostitution,” she eventually convinced herself that in many species “mating rituals [often involve] the exchange of gifts” and “suspected gold diggers like Heather Mills or the late Anna Nicole Smith … were merely following their evolutionary instincts.” Keep reading »
OK, makers of “Bonetown,” you win: we will draw more attention to your racist, sexist, morally depraved video game by writing about it.
“Bonetown” touts itself as “the world’s first action adventure porno video game,” but it’s more like thoughts from the internet’s most ignorant trolls set to animation. You know, the trolls who think racism and sexism have been “solved” so it’s really hilarious to perpetuate stereotypes about minorities and women. It’s unclear what the game part of “Bonetown” actually is, which is actually why it’s scary. Rather than a game, “Bonetown” appears to be more like SecondLife for players who delight in glorifying such ignorance as funny. Keep reading »
Another day, another sports star accused of rape: Lawrence Taylor, a former football player for the New York Giants, was arrested today for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. The girl, whose identity will likely be kept secret because of her young age, was allegedly prostituted out by a pimp at a Holiday Inn in Suffern, New York. Police say the victim, a teen runaway from Bronx, New York, missing since March, was also allegedly beaten during the liaison, although it’s unclear who the beating came from. The girl reportedly texted her uncle while her pimp was driving back to the Bronx and he called the police, who intercepted the car. The teen was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for a punch to her face and given a rape examination. Taylor, who has had numerous past run-ins with the law involving drugs, will be charged with third-degree rape, which includes charges of sex with a minor. Keep reading »
Iceland has passed a law to shut down all strip clubs, making it illegal for any business to profit from the nudity of its employees.
Well, duh. It’s cold up there.
Actually, no: politician Kolbrun Halldorsdottir, who first proposed the law, said on Wednesday, “It is not acceptable that women, or people in general, are a product to be sold.” Iceland began hammering that point home last year when it passed a law effectively banning prostitution by criminalizing the purchase of sex; the strip club law is simply the next step. If you are so old that having sex could stop your heart, you probably shouldn’t be doing it. Unfortunately, that isn’t stopping old geezers from hitting up brothels in Lugano, Switzerland, and … dying after sexytime. Recently, after poppin’ some pills to help him get it up and getting wild, an old guy’s heart stopped. Sounds crazy, but so many dudes are dying or coming close to it during or after hardcore sex with prostitutes that brothel owners in this picturesque Swiss town are going to stock their joints with defibrillators. Apparently, administering electric shock is becoming, “increasingly quick and easy for the lay person to use.” Maybe prostitutes aren’t the only ones who should have to pass a health exam before getting down and dirty? One film in particular has shaken up the Berlin International Film Festival taking place this week: “Frauenzimmer,” a documentary by 28-year-old filmmaker Saara Aila Waasner which follows three grandmother-aged women who work as prostitutes in Germany. Yes, prostitutes! Christel, 59, boasts of the demand for older women; Paula, 49, runs a bordello; and Karolina, 64, is a dominatrix who works in an S&M studio. Waasner said she wanted to show “the real people behind the job” and how some female sex workers find the job to be empowering, not exploitative. We just have one question: How soon until “Frauenzimmer” — or “Silver Girls” in English — opens in the U.S.? [The Local DE]
