Tim Gunn’s Mutiny: Asks If “Project Runway” Judges Are Smoking Crack

Last night brought the season premiere of “Project Runway,” and I tried—really tried—to stay awake through all 90 minutes of it. But while this show once seemed so fresh and original, now that it’s in its 8th season, it’s just stale. So to add an extra 30 minutes to every episode? Egads. I found myself drifting off and contemplating such things as: what is Heidi Klum‘s tattoo on her right inner arm?

The one bit of good news about the show is that Tim Gunn‘s role has been slightly broadened. He now does confessional interviews that are interspersed throughout the episode. But he still isn’t a judge because, as he says, “I’m a believer in the separation of church and state.” And sadly, Tim feels that judges Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia made some bad decisions this season. In one episode, he intervened during a judging session because he felt they were about to send the wrong person home. “I’ve never witnessed a season where I felt so disabled by what the judges have decided,” he says. “There’s a reason I call them crack-smoking judges.” [NY Post] Keep reading »

Nina Garcia Scares The Crap Out Of All The New “Project Runway” Designers

It’s that time again! “Project Runway” season 8 debuts tonight and PopSugar has video-chatted with the new designers. It’s a short video, but there don’t seem to be any obvious annoying cast members. I like the chick who asks herself, “What would Elvis do? And would ZZ Top be proud?” They’re all terribly afraid of judge Nina Garcia, though. Hmm, why would that be? (Kidding.) Diana Eng’s Glowing LED Garments Illuminate The Runway

The Atlantic website just posted this beautiful video from Diana Eng‘s fashion show at last February’s New York Fashion Week. You may remember Eng as the technology-obsessed designer from the second season of “Project Runway.” Now she’s known (at least according to Wikipedia) for having popularized the term “fashion nerd.” Her collection featured garments outfitted with microphones, LED lights, and interactive components: “Off the runway, the dress’ microphones can pick up sounds from the wearer’s voice: when she speaks, she lights up in true diva style.” While we’ve certainly covered the intersection of fashion and technology here before, it’s not always this beautiful. The Guy With The Craziest Hair Always Wins “Project Runway”

Season seven of “Project Runway” dealt its final “auf wiedersehen” this week. Seth Aaron out-styled Mila and Emilio, further proving my theory that the guy with the most alternative hair on the show has the best chances of winning. Think about it—Seth Aaron’s faux-hawk-punk-rock-side-burn hair thing looks strangely similar to season three winner Jeffrey’s do. Between season one winner Jay McCarroll’s creative hats and the crazy mane of season five’s Christian Siriano, my theory can basically be considered fact.

OK, that’s enough. Something that almost everyone can probably agree on is that Lifetime’s second attempt at hosting the show was much more successful and entertaining than the first. But still, it lacked that Bravo somethin’ somethin’. Keep reading »

Big Things Are Going On For Korto Momolu

Korto Momolu, who placed second during season five of “Project Runway,” showed during New York Fashion Week for the first time since appearing on the competition show and launched an accessories collection for Dillard’s on the same day. Her fall 2010 collection featured statement coats, updated cowl necks, and beautiful knits. (See the collection here.) Korto says she began designing the impressive collection after Thanksgiving, which is late for most designers. Her accessories line for Dillard’s, which features jewelry and handbags, is as exciting as her clothing. I’m especially loving the Horn Handle Hobo Bag and the Twisted Hoop Earrings. Korto designs another jewelry line as well, The Saba Collection, which is a collaboration with Madera Exotic woods to produce eco-friendly polished wood jewelry. The wood she uses actually resembles stones. It seems her loss on “Project Runway” and sheer determination have propelled Korto to realize her dream fashion career. What’s In Leanne Marshall’s Closet?

You remember the quiet but determined Leanne Marshall, who went on to win Season 5 of “Project Runway”? She wowed the judges with her precious designs, proving that vintage styles and airy pieces are exactly what women want to wear. A few seasons after her spotlight moment, she allowed Time Out New York to visit her DUMBO apartment and take pictures of her (well-organized) closet, which, unsurprisingly, holds many vintage pieces, Portland fashion finds, a locket from her boyfriend, and, of course, her own creations. It’s a peek into the designer’s personal style sensibility, and you’ll find a list of her favorite stores in New York City: Kaight, where she sells her line, Urban Outfitters, and Something Else, to name a few. Plus, you can check out her shoe collection. The tour wouldn’t be complete without a bit of “Project Runway” in the mix; her closet is decorated with a Tim Gunn bobble head.
