Beauty Files: Bare-Faced Beauty

In the world of runway and celebrity beauty, the term “bare-faced” doesn’t actually mean a face that’s, well, bare. In fact, its real definition is much to the contrary — it’s a face full of makeup that imitates the look of flawless naked skin, the reality of which very few people can lay claim to. Luckily, perfect skin is a surprisingly simple look to achieve, requiring little more than a few hardworking products and the right tools to apply them. Once you know how to fake a naturally smooth, glowing complexion, it’ll become your canvas — you can accentuate your perfect base with a bright matte lipstick or smoky eye, or make like Stella and pile on the blue mascara for a mod take on vivid color. The opportunities are endless. Get the details, after the jump … Keep reading »

Makeup Bag: 9 Products To Put The Shine Back In (Or Prevent) Parched Summer Strands

We get the point — as good as the sun may feel (and it does), it’s not actually good for you. Now that the breaking news is out, let’s talk specifics. The sun’s rays aren’t only harmful to your skin; they also wreak havoc on your hair. Days spent lazing at the beach, by the pool, or even just strolling street-side in the city zaps the moisture and color (if you have it) out of strands, leaving you not with the loose Gisele ringlets of our collective dreams but rather a stripped, lifeless, crackling crowning accessory. Sea salt and chlorine also happen to be mane enemies, so if you’re not caring for your hair after partaking in seasonal festivities, then you definitely won’t like what you have to deal with come September. With maintenance in mind, here are my nine picks for products, both pre- and post-emptive, that will help your hair keep its cool.

Makeup Bag: 10 Product Picks For A Summer-Proof Face

I’m convinced that I am one of melting makeup’s worst victims. I have serious issues keeping my face on the other nine months of the year, let alone summer, when it’s prime time for super sexy sweaty skin. As such, I’ve been forced to develop some pretty hardcore techniques for keeping my makeup on as long as possible. The best strategy I can stand behind is to keep it minimal, especially as far as foundation goes — and by that, I mean no foundation at all. It may sound scary, but a little bit of tinted moisturizer and a whole lot of a good concealer can carry you through the day (and oh, those summer nights) without the spotty disintegrating effect a thicker formula tends to cause when things get heated. Thankfully, I’m not alone in this fight — some of my favorite brands have stepped up to give me a hand in my battle against the heat. Here are ten of my product picks for makeup that stays fresh, even when you feel anything but.

I carry around a makeup bag with me every day. It’s a small makeup bag, but it’s not light, mostly because I have shoved things into it over capacity. I stuff it into whatever bag I’m carrying, even if it’s a teeny-tiny crossbody like the one I use during the week to offset my 1,000-pound laptop bag. Some days I don’t even use anything in the makeup bag, but it comforts me to have it in my possession, like a narcissistic safety blanket. This little bag is the one I’m sharing because my at-home makeup bag, the one I use to get ready in the morning, has been known to leave brothers, fathers, boyfriends, and even mothers flabbergasted by the sheer weight and seize of it. This one is marginally less shocking: it contains very little real makeup and is more like a shrine to lip balm. Here’s what’s in my dirty little makeup bag — do you have a permanent purse beauty fixture like mine? Keep reading »

I brought my make up bag to work with me today because I stayed at my dude’s house last night, and it was too cold to schlep home and then out to the office. I consolidated my morning! Good, right? Except that my makeup bag, like my life, was short a couple of totally necessary items. Surprisingly, though, there were still 19 (!) things crammed up in that bitch — some of my favorite products that I use every day, and some stuff that I should probably get rid of. I thought you might want to see what a “real life style editor” (WHATEVER THAT MEANS) keeps in her bag, for real. Click through to see what I’m using, and share your make up bag contents in the comments. Oh, and if you notice that everything in my make up bag looks dirty, that’s because it is. Some mystery powder spilled out, and now the contents of my bag are covered in shimmer. Gross.

Booze Peddler

Spring has sprung! Time to start riding our bikes everywhere — to work, to do errands, and to rooftop parties where the wine shall flow freely. The wine! Oh crap, we’re supposed to bring a bottle — perhaps a lovely Malbec or Pinot Grigio. Transporting the booze is no problem with oopsmark’s leather wine holster with brass hardware, which secures tightly on our bike’s frame and fits any size bottle of vino. Start peddling.
