Researchers at the University of New South Wales made a disturbing discovery while studying sexual risk behaviors in Australian prisons. They noticed a rise in prisoners with genital skin infections due to bead-like foreign bodies being inserted under the penis.Digging deeper into the phenomenon, the research team discovered that nearly six percent of male prisoners in Queensland and New South Wales were giving themselves these DIY penis implants, the majority of them while they were behind bars. Oklahoma Inmates Are Dashing In Pastels And Stripes
Ooh, la-la! If I ever end up in the pokey, I hope it’s in Cleveland County. There, Oklahoma inmates have been required to wear pink top and yellow striped bottoms prison garb for the last 16 months. The orange jumpsuit of yesterday is so passé. Still, the new pastels must be a bit embarrassing to rock when you’re trying to thug out while doing time, no? Apparently, this is no clink-y fashion statement or an attempt to humiliate prisoners into never wanting to return to prison again, prison management says. It simply makes prisoners easier to spot if they decide to flee the premises. “If one of them slips over the wall,” Undersheriff Rhett Burnett told NewsOK.com, “we want to know about it right away.” If the warden doesn’t get these escapees, we bet the fashion police will. Marcus Day, the adviser to the Association of Caribbean Heads of Corrections and Prison Services, is recommending prisons in the Caribbean implement condom distribution programs (despite concerns from the religious community that this will promote sex between men). A slightly more innovative course of action he’s suggesting is conjugal visits for married prisoners. Marcus said this would greatly reduce the desire for prisoners to have sex with other prisoners. Now, this might work, so long as the prisoners aren’t going at it with each other while their wives aren’t around, and then going at it with their wives, possibly spreading the virus even more. There are currently more than 2 million people in America’s jails and prisons, and they celebrate birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and New Year’s just like the rest of us. Life continues inside prison walls, but Hallmark doesn’t make a card that says, “I hope you’ll get parole soon!” Three Square Greetings, a company that makes cards expressly intended for prisoners, was founded by Terrye Cheathem after she had a difficult time finding an appropriate card for her brother-in-law, who served 11 months in prison. “There weren’t any cards on the shelf that said anything like, ‘Hey, you must make better choices,’” Terrye said. Beauty Pageant Behind Bars
Being sent to the bleak women’s prison UF-91/9 in Siberia doesn’t exactly sound as elegant as Martha Stewart’s Camp Cupcake. But once a year, at their annual “Miss Spring” Beauty Pageant, the women put on more girlie trimmings than even one of the TV homemaker’s creations. What started with a dress made from scraps of kitchen trash bags has become a glamorous fashion show with a few outfits per contestant. At this female-run pageant you won’t find a swimsuit competition, but there are three creative categories based on Greek myths, flowers, and futuristic prison uniforms. The convicted, uh, cuties, who are serving time for everything from possession of narcotics to murder, compete for the title, which comes with quite a prize: a chance at early parole.
