It took me four viewings of this Latisse commercial to believe it actually starred Claire Danes, and not just a Claire look-alike. “Oh how the mighty have fallen,” I thought. “Wasn’t she once one of the most promising actresses of our generation? Who left ‘My So-Called Life’ for a movie career? Got Varicose Veins? There May Be Hope Yet …

Oh, those Europeans with their progressive societies ripe with universal health care, affordable education, hardly enforced drinking ages … and niche prescription meds unavailable elsewhere. Well, at least one European medical import is about to make its way Stateside. The FDA has just approved a medication called Asclera, used to treat varicose veins. Considered to be very safe and the best treatment out there, the injectable drug was apparently being used sneakily by some in the U.S., reports the Times: ” … polidocanol [clinical name], had not been legal, although some doctors used it, importing it from abroad or obtaining it from pharmacies that make drug compounds.”

Now that Asclera has been made legal here, it may be a good thing to keep in mind should the day ever arrive when varicose veins start blooming. (Let’s hope that’s not the case.) What we’d like to know is are the Europeans using some secret treatment for cellulite? Because that’s something we’d definitely be interested in hearing about next … cough, cough. There are some things that you would think wouldn’t follow you into adulthood. Fear of the dark, a love for Disneyland, jelly sandals. One of the more annoying ones: acne. Q&A: Confessions Of A Pill Head

I vividly remember walking into the interview. I was a junior in college and had scored a meeting with Joshua Lyon, an editor at Jane Magazine, the publication I’d been dreaming of working for since the first issue had appeared on newsstands and I skipped school to read it cover-to-cover. The interview went well, and an hour later, I got the phone call that he had picked me to be his intern. I was elated.

Josh and I worked together for the next four years. Turns out that, for two of them, he was almost always high on prescription pain killers.

Josh has written a fascinating book, Pill Head, about the whole ordeal. It’s part memoir, and part sociological exploration of why so many people in the United States—48 million of them to be exact—have used prescription pills for non-medical purposes.
