Jessica gets $500K if Justin cheats on her. How romantic! Read More »

The amazing Amelia Earhart –┬áthe first female aviator to fly a solo transatlantic flight — is a feminist icon for many reasons, so I suppose it should come as no surprise that she had an incredibly modern view of marriage for the early 1900s. Earhart, who disappeared during a flight in 1937, wrote the above prenuptial letter to her future husband George Putnam, expressing her weariness of the institution itself, and then laying out her expectations for such a union which include a willingness to be monogam-ish well before Dan Savage coined the term, and a need for privacy and respect for her career aspirations. Very cool. [Feministing]

8 Crazy Celebrity Prenuptial Agreement Clauses

Jessica Biel may have finally gotten ladies man Justin Timberlake to commit, but she’s no dummy — along with the rock on her finger, Jessica is apparently locking Justin into a prenup that he’d be stupid to break. According to Radar, Jessica will get at least $500K if Justin ever cheats on her — an insurance policy that is no doubt related to rumors that he’s strayed a few times throughout their relationship. Apparently, Jessica isn’t 100 percent trusting of J.Tim just yet, so she wants a few cheat-free years of wedded bliss before she’ll pop out any babies — especially since “Jessica figures if she gets fat during pregnancy, he’ll cheat again.” How … romantic. Call me crazy, but $500K seems a little low, no? I mean, Justin is a huge star with a LOT of money in the bank. I would have gone for $1 million per! [Radar]

In the grand scheme of celeb prenups, Jessica’s cheating clause is pretty tame. Celebrities are masters of manipulating prenuptial agreements to cater to their lifestyles. Here are a few of the weirdest stipulations.

Katy Perry & Russell Brand, Plus 10 Other Celeb Couples That Didn’t Have Prenups

“I want to make our wedding just about me and her loving each other. We want to get married in front of our friends and family and keep it normal. It ain’t about selling the pictures, it ain’t about doing no prenup.”

That’s what Russell Brand had to say back in October 2010, just days before he wed Katy Perry in an extravagant ceremony in India. Now, of course, it seems like Brand lucked out, at least financially. Last Friday, the comedian filed for divorce from Katy Perry (who didn’t want to file herself and offend her extremely religious parents) and the couples’ assets are up for grabs. Brand apparently stands to make, gulp, an estimated $20 million from the pop star’s fortune because, under California law, the state’s community property clause splits money and property acquired during the union 50/50 when there isn’t a prenup. Someone should have told Katy that rich “California Girls” cover their assets before walking down the aisle. It remains to be seen, of course, how this will actually play out in court and whether Brand will actually go for “his” half of Katy’s fortune. [Hollywood Life]

After the jump, more celebs who got married sans prenups. Spoiler alert: Most of their stories don’t end so well.

Cash & Coupling: Seriously, Ladies, Get A Damn Prenup!

Prenups are a backup plan. Like any other backup plan — the fold-up flats in your purse, tampons in your desk drawer at work, the rape whistle on your keychain — you don’t expect to use it, and you really hope not to, but thank God it’s there when you need it. For women, divorce is financially dangerous, and you’re necessarily subject to a 50 percent chance of suffering from it if you marry. After the jump, I’ll debunk popular excuses for avoiding a prenup. Keep reading »

Phil Spector Proposed The Worst Prenup Ever

Music legend Phil Spector, who’s currently in prison for murdering actress Lana Clarkson, once sent a missive to Hollywood lawyer Marvin Mitchelson outlining his idea of the ideal prenup. Suffice to say, a sharer he isn’t. Check out the prenup after the jump. (Don’t sign Lamar’s if it looks like this one, Khloe!) Keep reading »
