Pregnant Commuter Kept Track Of How Much You Suck At Giving Up Your Seat

Most of us would like to think that if we saw a pregnant, elderly or handicapped person on the train or subway, we would offer up our seat in a jiffy. But a nifty social experiment done on the New York City subway by Elizabeth Carey Smith of Brooklyn, New York, during her recent pregnancy found that while she was offered a seat the majority of the time, good manners were not guaranteed. “Baby-Breeding” Ring Busted In Asia

Anywhere you can find women, you can find people trying to control women’s reproductive capabilities. I write a lot on The Frisky about attempts to deter women from having abortions. But in parts of Asia, there’s a problem that’s quite different: fertile women acting as surrogates who are kept in farm-like conditions for “baby breeding.” Recently, 14 Vietnamese women, including seven who were pregnant, were rescued from an “illegal and inhuman” baby breeding facility in Thailand. Mom Wants Mentally Challenged Daughter Sterilized

Here’s a sticky wicket for you: the mother of a 21-year-old mentally challenged woman in Britain is asking a court for permission to sterilize her daughter so she will not continue getting pregnant. The daughter, who is referred to in court as P to protect her anonymity, already has two young children who are being raised by P’s mother, Mrs. P, who lives with them. However, Mrs. P said she cannot financially support a larger family and that when she took her daughter to a family planning clinic, she refused to get a contraceptive injection (Depo Provera). As Mrs. P described it, if P were to become pregnant again, Mrs. P would put the baby up for adoption. The nature of P’s mental difficulties are not explained by the Guardian, but Mrs. P told the court that P does not seem to understand the gravity of the situation. “I tried to explain that any future babies will go to a new mum and dad,” Mrs. P said. “She doesn’t understand that she won’t ever see them again. She says, ‘I’m the mummy’. She doesn’t understand they will get a new mum.”

Mrs. P continued, “I want the best for my daughter. We are supporting and helping her, bringing up her children and keeping them together as family unit. Obviously we can’t carry on supporting more and more children. She doesn’t see anything wrong in her behavior.” The judge handling the case, however, said that expert evidence was not available to make a judgment and he declined to rule on an “extremely serious and important” issue without it. Having A Baby — Not Having An Abortion — Increases Your Risk For Mental Health Problems

Having an abortion does not trigger mental health problems, according to a Danish study of 365,550 teen girls and women who had an abortion or a baby between 1995 and 2007. In fact, what makes a woman most at risk for mental health problems is having a baby, the study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found. None of the women studied had a prior history of psychiatric hospitalization.

Sorry to burst your bubble, anti-abortion extremists. Keep reading »

Should Pregnant Ladies Get Special Parking Privileges?

A New York City councilman will introduce a law next week that would grant pregnant women special parking privileges. Women who are having difficult pregnancies that create mobility problems could get a doctor’s note entitling them to park in no-parking or no-standing zones, without fear of getting a ticket, up to 30 days after their due date. Councilman David Greenfield of Brooklyn said the pregnancy perk idea came after seeing his wife struggle while pregnant. “If I’m on a train and a pregnant woman walks in, I stand up and offer her my seat,” Greenfield told The New York Daily News. “I consider this legislation to be the same thing — standing up on the City Council for women who have difficult pregnancies.” Aww, that’s kinda sweet. These Pregnant Women Sure Look Fat In A Bikini Contest

I’m the last person to say a new mama can’t be sexy. But this bikini contest for pregnant women is bizarro. Moms-to-be don’t need to pop every which way out of a thong bikini to look beautiful. And seriously, anyone who is that knocked up shouldn’t be allowed to wear platform boots unless she’s trying to self-abort during a disco dance-off.

But hey, one pregnant woman’s pickles and ice cream is another pregnant woman’s fishnet thigh-highs. [Dlisted]

UPDATE: Oh hai! So, seems some of y’all didn’t quite get that Jessica was kidding. Well, she was. Hugely. PUN! I would like to assume anyone who’s read Jessica’s stuff on The Frisky — and complained about her being fat-centric or something — would get that she wasn’t being serious, but for those of you who were unaware, this was meant entirely tongue in cheek. And now I shall return to devouring a pint of ice cream and a jar of pickles. Even though I am not pregnant. Keep reading »

Warning: Don’t Wear Heels When You’re Preggers!

In addition to gaining weight, pregnant women have to deal with swelling feet and an expanding wardrobe to match their expanding bellies. But while fashion sense doesn’t have to change, it seems shoe choice really should. During pregnancy, it’s extremely important that women support their lower back, ankles, and muscles, but unfortunately most shoes are not created to do this — especially not high heels. That means if you’re ready to welcome a new baby into the world, your ballet shoes, flip-flops, heels, and flat sandals need to go to the back of the closet in favor of supportive shoes that will cradle your foot. Despite warnings and repeated reminders, women are still slipping their expanding pregnant feet into high heels and risking their health and muscles for fashion. Here’s an idea: Think of the new required footwear as an excuse to wear comfortable shoes for nine months. Teresa Giudice, are you listening? [BBC] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Teacher Canned For Premarital Sex

  • Jarretta Hamilton, a fourth grade teacher in St. Cloud, Florida, was fired for getting pregnant while she was engaged. When Hamilton’s boss at Southland Christian School asked her when she conceived, she answered honestly that she got pregnant three weeks before her wedding and was then fired for “fornication.” Now Southland Christian School is facing a discrimination lawsuit, arguing that pregnant, unmarried women would be fired under such rules while unmarried men who “fornicate” would not get caught.
