Mostly when we discuss the “right to choose,” we focus on the right to safe and legal access to abortion.  We mostly focus abortion as the “choice” because a woman’s right to make her own family planning decisions is constantly under attack from conservative politicians and the anti-abortion movement, both of which are pickled with the Religious Right.

But a woman’s right to make her own family planning decisions also includes the choice make a family — even, in a recent case out of Texas, if the woman in question is a pregnant 16-year-old girl whose parents were trying to force her to have an abortion. Keep reading »

Beyonce Talks Fake Pregnancy Rumors With “GQ”

Beyonce rocks a Brooklyn Nets hat and lacy bra in this newly released photo from her GQ February cover story.
Here’s some extra’s from the 31-year-old entertainer’s interview that were just released:

On rumors that her pregnancy was fake: “I felt like I kind of had to protect my mother [Tina], because when people made up the silliest rumor about me not really being pregnant She was there when I went through all of those things. And my sister [Solange]. They were very, very defensive. It’s not personal to me, and it comes along with the job, but the lack of respect—people will just go too far sometimes.” Read more …

Watch This: Men Find Out What Childbirth Feels Like

Just breathe through it, buddy!

In the latest experiment for their show “Guinea Pigs,” Dutch TV hosts Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno were hooked up to an electro-simulator that mimics the painful contractions women experience during labor. The video is in Dutch, but around the 7-minute mark, it becomes very clear that agony is a universal language. Apparently the guys underwent two hours of simulated contractions, which is significantly less time than the 6-12 hours (and beyond!) that many women spend in labor. Also? I’d imagine the whole process is a bit less harrowing without the whole “pushing a watermelon-sized human out of your crotch” part. Mothers, give yourselves a pat on the back. You deserve it. CUNY Accused Of Discriminating Against Pregnant Student

Today's Lady News photo
  • The City University of New York has been cited with a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights for allowing the discrimination against a 27-year-old pregnant student. Stephanie Stewart was told by a teacher that she could not make up homework or tests due to pregnancy-related absences, including labor and delivery. She was told by CUNY that professors are allowed to make their own rules about students making up work — despite the fact the federal law Title IX prohibits sex discrimination, including against pregnant students with medically necessary absences. Like, oh, giving birth! I’ll be curious to watch how this pans out. [National Women's Law Center] Keep reading »

kim kardashian kanye west

I’m not sure if you all heard about it or not, but Kim Kardashian is pregnant. I’ll wait a moment for the shock to sink in.

We can now look forward to six more months of paparazzi falling all over themselves for the newest baby bump shots, interviews with Kim and Kanye’s potential nannies, photoshoots of their nurseries, and “in depth” articles that pontificate on everything from what Kris Jenner will go by (something tells me she doesn’t dig “Granny”) to whether Kanye will cut the cord, to dissecting which potential weight loss programs Kim will utilize/shill to get back into her “pre-baby bod.”

And I can tell you already, I’m over it. Keep reading »

Kim Kardashian’s Most Important Pregnancy Essentials

Woohoo! The Illuminati is having a baby, you guys, and I’m so stoked! Yep, the axis of evil (and fun, so much fun) heretofore known as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, now the singular Kimye, got knocked up. E! Online was kind enough to present a sort of gift guide of Kim’s maternity must-haves for a stylish and comfortable nine months (or however long Damien must incubate), and I got kind of jealous so I had to go and make my own. Get the details on the stuff I think is perfect for Kim’s pregnancy after the jump! Also, if anyone could send me Kimye’s address that would be great, just so I can get their gifts to them ASAP. Thanks in advance, everybody! Keep reading »

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, then allow me to be the first to share the breaking news: Princess Kate is pregnant! Now feel free to join in with the rest of the world as it goes absolutely completely bonkers in reaction.

I understand that a new baby, especially one of royal lineage, is a huge deal. And sure, I’m also super curious whether the wee-one-to-be is going to have a head full of shiny, chestnut locks like his or her mother. But honestly? The most I can muster up for Kate right now, beyond my heartfelt congratulations, is my deepest sympathies. Keep reading »

Given the Gawker mandate to be glib and ruthless, whether or not they know what they’re talking about, I won’t pretend to be shocked by a dashed-off remark in Monday’s post on Kate Middleton’s pregnancy:

The Palace also reported that Kate was admitted to the hospital today with “hyperemesis gravidarum,” which is what they call regular old morning sickness when you are a princess.

Nor, for more or less the same reasons, was it surprising to watch the ladies of “The View” dismiss the duchess’s condition with a flurry of bubbly interruptions, ignoring a nurse’s earnest response to Barbara Walters’ half-hearted question about whether HG is serious: “It can be,” the nurse said sheepishly. (In an open letter to the duchess, HG sufferer Betsy Shaw gives Kate “permission to slap” Walters.)

I have no idea whether Kate has HG or not. But the fact remains that it can be a brutal, crippling condition that goes largely ignored and untreated, partly due to its overlap with ordinary pregnancy sickness and partly to our attitude toward suffering and the suffering of pregnant women in particular. As Atul Gawande noted in an indispensable 1999 New Yorker piece on nausea and vomiting, “A surprising number of doctors still believe in the discredited Freudian theory that hyperemesis is due to an unconscious rejection of pregnancy.” Little seems to have changed since the last century — or the one before, for that matter. 12 Dos & Don’ts Of … Pregnancy Fashion (Just For Kate Middleton!)

The Duchess of Cambridge and I haven’t always seen eye to eye when it comes to fashion, but I’ve come to respect her more subdued style — and I understand that she’s got to rep for England, the Queen and British designers, so she’s got to be a bit more conservative than I normally like.

Now that she’s preggers, she’s going to have a whole new bunch of wardrobe challenges to contend with. That’s why we’ve assembled this collection of maternity-wear dos and don’ts, especially for the princess.
