A movie exec over at Sony is trying to convince theater owners to sell healthy snacks instead of popcorn, and theater managers have been receptive, but whether patrons will hop concession stand lines to get a bucket of cauliflower is debatable. Most of you Christmas celebrators have probably had your tree up for weeks. My family, however, must be full of procrastinators, because we like to wait until Christmas Eve to trim the tree. It started when a few of us went off to college, and my parents thought it would be nice to wait until everyone had returned before selecting an evergreen. Being the last one on the block with a tree in the window has worked out well for us; there are usually crazy discounts the day before since Christmas trees aren’t exactly useful after the fact.

Scientists recently found that snack foods and many whole grain breakfast cereals contain surprisingly large amounts of antioxidant substances called polyphenols, which are a large part of why fruits, veggies, and other foods have been called out for potentially reducing the risk of some diseases. Because breakfast cereals, pasta, crackers, and salty snacks account for 66 percent of whole grain intake in the the standard American’s diet, this is a good thing — at least you aren’t eating those Frosted Mini-Wheats for nothing! The study found popcorn to be a standout snack food, as it had the highest level of antioxidants in the study.
