Poor women in India have a man to thank for their low-cost menstrual supplies. Arunachalam Muruganantham risked his marriage and his family in order to revolutionize the production of maxi-pads so that they be made more affordable to poor women. In much of rural India, women were using rags, leaves or even newspapers as pads. Girls often miss school during their periods, or will drop out all together, because they’re unable to manage their menstruation.

Today’s Lady News: Abortion Rate Up Amongst Poor Women

  • The abortion rate is down overall, but up amongst poor women, the non-partisan sexual research organization Guttmacher reports. Between 2000 and 2008, abortion rates declined amongst most groups of women, but not women whose family incomes are less than 100 percent of the federal poverty level. Poor women’s abortion rate increased 18 percent between 2000 and 2008. Maybe anti-abortion activists will someday get it through their heads that mothers and fathers actually like to food feed, clothe and shelter their children? [Guttmacher]
