The Devil Dog-Lover Wears Prada: Saks Fifth Avenue To Sell Plus-Size Clothes

High fashion is usually a skinny woman’s game (which is not so surprising when you consider the 15-year-old girls stomping designer looks down the runways). But Saks Fifth Avenue is taking a bold step to be inclusive to all women by beginning to sell plus sizes. The flagship department store in New York City will soon offer high-end clothes by Chanel, Fendi, Yves St. Laurent and other designers up to at least size 14; depending on the designer, some clothes will be available up to size 20. Huh. I didn’t even know companies like Chanel made bigger sizes. Did Saks make this decision out of the goodness of its heart? Or was it a financial decision? I would imagine in a bad economy, when $7,000 skirts aren’t flying off hangers, Saks decided to broaden their clientele. But, hey, I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth, especially if the company brings this new size-conscious model to stores around the country at a future date. [Racked] Keep reading »

Anything Over Size 10 Is “Plus Size” At Forever 21

I guess it serves me right for trying to buy denim at Forever 21. But what can I say? I needed new jeans and was trying to be thrifty. Last week Annika, Intern Carli, Intern Lauren, and I hit up the ginormous new Forever 21 in Times Square after work and explored its many cavernous floors. We were looking at duds in one section of one floor when we noticed all the clothes were large-ish; then somebody realized we were in the plus-size section. We headed to the floor below and I told Annika I wanted to check out the jeans. I had to grab a sales associate, though, because the sizes only went up to 10 and I needed something bigger. “Over size 10 will be upstairs in the left-hand corner,” the saleslady told me. “You mean in the plus-size section?” I asked. Today’s Lady News: Crystal Renn’s Agent Assures Everyone She’s Still A Size 10

A couple of blogs — including us — noticed that supermodel Crystal Renn, who is fuller-figured and vocal about promoting healthier body images, looks much skinnier in recent pics. But Renn’s agent at Ford models, Gary Dakin, confirmed Renn is a size 10 and is not trying to lose weight. It’s kinda weird that the poor girl’s agent has to talk to the press about what size she is! Nevada senatorial candidate Sharron Angle believes abortion should be illegal in cases of rape and incest. In a long interview about her views, she described a young girl she knows who was the victim of rape by her father, who was then adopted by new parents. “And they found that they had made what was really a lemon situation into lemonade,” Angle says. Louisiana Senator David Vitter has finally responded to why he let an employee stay on staff for two years after he allegedly beat his girlfriend. So if Brent Furer allegedly beat his girlfriend, why was he assigned to work on women’s issues? He wasn’t, says Vitter. Brent Furer only worked on abortion issues, not women’s issues. Ah, OK. Frisky Q & A: Nikky Blonsky On Her New Show “Huge,” Plus-Size Actresses & Zac Efron

Missing Nikki Blonsky from your life after the 2007 remake of “Hairspray”? Have no fear, she’s back again: not in a John Waters musical this time, but on “Huge,” a new TV series about plus-size teens at a weight loss camp.

“Huge” stars Blonsky, 21, as a girl sent to the camp by parents who want her to drop some pounds, which is not in her plans at all. Blonsky stars alongside Hayley Hasselhoff — yes, The Hoff’s daughter — who is totally gung-ho about losing weight because she’s convinced her life will be awesome if she’s skinny and hot. Most of the cast memebrs are plus-size actors and actresses. “I don’t think there’s ever been a full cast of plus size people before,” says Blonsky.

Today’s Lady News: “Top Model” Judge Calls Plus-Size Models A “Joke”

Julien Macdonald, a designer and a judge on “Britain’s Next Top Model,” issued a slap in the face to plus-size models everywhere when he said they don’t belong on his show. “There were no plus-size models,” he said, referring to the show’s sixth season. “This is a serious show. You can’t have a plus-size girl winning. It makes it a joke. It’s not fair on them. You’re setting them up for a fall. I know what would happen to them. Would You Join SonsiLiving, A Social Networking Site Just For Plus-Size Women?

Who needs another social networking site, right? Apparently, plus-size women. The company that owns Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, and Catherines is launching Sonsi.com, a site hawking clothing and accessories for “real women” who are size 12 and up, as well as an “inclusive” social networking site called SonsiLiving, which offers articles on fashion and beauty, recipes for entertaining and groups like “SuperMoms” and the “Fashionista Club.” Keep reading »

Skeletons In Lingerie: Is This Spoof On Victoria’s Secret Funny Or Tasteless?

Sure, it’s hypocritical and fat-phobic of ABC to air the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show starring Heidi Klum’s glorious ta-tas while also demanding “excessive re-edits” on this plus-size lingerie commercial from Lane Bryant. But what do we think of LandlineTV’s spoof on Victoria’s Secret: a faux-sexy commercial starring skeletons in a blond wig and lingerie (a spoof which a gleeful Lane Bryant posted on their Inside Curve blog!)? Is it a biting social commentary on body image standards or a tasteless joke, considering the culture of body-hating and eating disorders not only among models but all women? I personally am in the “biting social commentary” camp, but at least one blogger with an eating disorder, who I follow on Twitter, was vehement that lady-skeletons are not “appropriate.” Tell us what you think in the comments. Lane Bryant Says ABC Is Fat-O-Phobic

Apparently ABC has a problem with hot ladies in their undies. Or so says plus-sized lingerie purveyor Lane Bryant in their claim that the network tried to shut out their plus-sized lingerie commercial. ABC “demanded excessive re-edits and rebuffed it three times before relenting to air it during the final 10 minutes of ‘American Idol,’ but only after we threatened to pull the ad buy,” blogged the company in a bit of well-placed outrage. We watched the commercial (above) and don’t get what the problem is. Yeah, she’s crazy hot and half naked, but ABC routinely airs Victoria’s Secret commercials featuring busty teenagers prancing about in front of fans; this looks tame by comparison. Thoughts? “Well, [in modeling] there is the standard, which is a 34-inch hip and then there is ‘plus’ that. Unfortunately, I think when people think of ‘plus’ they think of only size 18, but the great thing about what I do, is that they have been more inclusive of size 8′s and all the way up to bigger sizes like 20.

Personally, I wish there wasn’t this huge separation. I think it’s about being the size that you are, eating a healthy diet and doing moderate exercise — your body will settle where it’s supposed to be, whether that’s a 2 or a 16/18.”

Why Are Plus Sizes Labeled “Wide”?

My brother is getting married! And I couldn’t have picked a cooler future sister-in-law myself. I’m so friggin’ excited for the wedding, I don’t even mind the usual BS of being a bridesmaid. She’s special, people! In fact, my new sister is so rad, she’s letting me pick any style dress I want, so long as it is a matching shade of blue. Does it get any better than that? Finally, after all those times I tried to squeeze into a standard bridesmaid dress, I’m free to be me and get an ensemble that I actually fit in!

Well, that attitude lasted all the way up until the second I walked into the bridal store and the saleswoman pegged me as “very hippie.” At first I wondered if I smelled like patchouli or something, but then I saw the sample sizes and knew she was talking about my shape. I’m realistic; I didn’t expect to be able to get into one of those prefab try-on dresses; they’re all half my size. I just picked the one with the most generous skirt to order and figured the tailor would just go all Tim Gunn on it, because this was clearly a “make it work” time. Keep reading »
