I’m not plus-size, but as a fashion-loving girl who’s small-framed and somewhat oddly proportioned, I completely sympathize with the plight that is finding quality clothing that not only just kind of fits but truly flatters. It can be incomprehensibly difficult to style a woman who doesn’t adhere to the slim, often straight up-and-down silhouette that designers cater to (see: the gorgeous Christina Hendricks and her many sartorial misses). Adele — and, giving credit where credit is due, her stylist — is the consummate example of a woman who dresses beautifully for her shape, oftentimes with the help of Burberry Prorsum creative director Christopher Bailey.
Now, rumors are rumors, but this is one that’s too exciting not to spread: Vogue UK reported this morning that the chanteuse may have been approached by Bailey to be not only an ambassador for the quintessentially British fashion house, but also to collaborate on a bespoke line for plus-size women. Neither Burberry nor Adele have commented on the potential partnership, so for now it’s all just hearsay… but wouldn’t it be awesome? [Fashionista]

I was recently contacted through my website by a pregnant black woman who inquired about hiring me to perform standup at her baby shower. She and her husband were diehard comedy fans, and thought it would be fun to have a comic perform for their guests.
“How did you find me?” I asked. “I Googled ‘Fat Black Female Comics’ and you were one of the women that popped up!” she answered. “Everyone knows that fat black women are the funniest comics alive!”
After I hung up the phone, I sat there for a moment trying to figure out if I should be offended or not. While I understand that she was trying to be complimentary, I’m not sure if I am flattered by someone thinking that I am automatically funny just because I am plus-sized and black. Then I thought about the $1,500 she offered to pay me to stand in the middle of her living room and crack jokes for 30 minutes, and I instantly felt better. Throughout my career, I’ve been paid much less to do far worse. There was plenty of time for me to be offended later, but for now it was time to get paid!
Comedy is hard work, no matter what you look like. The perception that fat black women have an edge up, purely because of the size of their bodies, diminishes the amount of hard work, discipline and creativity that it takes for us to create this art form known as comedy. Furthermore, I think it’s crazy that someone would assume that all fat black women are funny.
On the other hand, I get it. Keep reading »

This beautiful woman is 22-year-old Vered Fisher, a member of the intelligence unit of the Israeli army who was crowned “Miss Large” after beating out 15 other contestants in a plus-size pageant. As weirded out as I am about beauty pageants in general, and as much as I wish there didn’t have to be a distinction between “large” beauty and mainstream beauty, it’s always refreshing to see more body diversity in areas that have normally been off-limits to larger women. Plus, I love Fisher’s message to other plus size women: “You are pretty as you are and you can succeed as you are.” [BuzzFeed]
I spent my teens and early 20s wishing for a bigger, rounder, fuller body. In fact, I did more than wish. I padded my bra with two rolled-up washcloths, I wore two pairs of long underwear beneath my jeans, and I stuffed myself with a pint of ice cream every night. Every night.
Alas, none of it worked. I remained a small-boobed, flat-assed, tiny-limbed, size zero waif. Keep reading »
