It's A Bird, It's A Plane!

A Filipino man by the name of Herbert Chavez loves Superman so much that he’s had 19 surgeries to try to become Superman. And Chavez is by no means finished. Really. He’s even had abdominal implants — apparently that’s a thing. Chavez makes a habit of strolling around his neighborhood streets decked out in full-out Superman attire, because you’ve got to go big or go home, right? He says his goal is to teach local kids good morals. Chavez also proudly sports a Guinness World Record for the biggest Superman memorabilia collection (1,253 items, in case you were wondering). YOLO, I guess. Keep doing you, buddy. I wonder if he has meetups with all the Real Life Human Barbie Dolls. [Telegraph UK]

As if fashion week weren’t problematic enough, what with the parades of drastically thin models and shameful lack of racial diversity, now a plastic surgeon has set up a runway next to the tents at Lincoln Center to stage a show of his “designs,” AKA cosmetic surgery patients, AKA human beings. Yep, the show was called “Faces Of Beauty” and featured 50(!) of the doctor’s former patients strutting the catwalk while photos of their former noses, foreheads, and chins were displayed on monitors behind them. “There are lot of trends out there. One is the clothes you wear. Another is the face and body you wear,” says the surgeon, who I’m not going to name because I don’t want to add to his Google hits. “Just like Ralph Lauren introduces his new line, what I am introducing is aesthetically pleasing plastic surgery.” Just overlook the minor detail that Ralph Lauren’s fabrics of choice are cotton and silk, while this dude’s are cartilage and flesh. The results of the first-ever survey of attractiveness from cosmetic facial surgery are in and it’s not pretty. According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, face, brow, and eye-lift patients looked only three years younger with an insignificant increase in attractiveness. How does one measure something so objective, you ask? Isn’t beauty, like, in the eye of the beholder and everything? Apparently not. Or, rather, it’s in the eye of several beholders. Researchers showed 49 patients’ (from the same surgeon) before and after photos to 50 judgmental randos, who told the surveyors how hot and old they thought they looked. On a scale from 1-10 in attractiveness, patients were generally rated between 4 to 6. The completely ego-busting scores could have been due to the patients’ age range of 42 to 73. Said Nancy Etcoff, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, “They’re looking at a face that looks older in some ways, and younger in some ways. It’s difficult for the raters, and confusing.” Something tells me though that this still won’t derail the millions of Americans who get plastic surgery every year. Hey, at least they didn’t look worse after their facelifts. Small victories, people. [NY Times] [Photo: Getty]

New thing to be afraid of: exploding breast implants!  The trauma is not unheard of, but the particular way in which one Beijing woman’s implants combusted just might be. After lying on her stomach for four hours playing a game called Dragon Summon on her phone, the woman experienced severe pain in her chest and went to the hospital. There she found out an implant had ruptured. This is very dangerous because the fluid can drain out into her body.

The implants were obviously of pretty questionable quality if they could not withstand the mere pressure of the woman’s body weight to which they were attached. Unfortunately, this is not the first time and it won’t be the last time that a person is injured from a leaking or ruptured implant. Here’s what we know:

14 Plastic Surgery Secrets Revealed

There are so many things you thought you knew about plastic surgery, but didn’t. Starting with…

Plastic Surgery for Tweens. The number of children opting for cosmetic procedures has risen dramatically over the past decade. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 160,000 children had cosmetic procedures in 2008. But in 2010, that number rose to 209,000. The debate centers around what kinds of procedures are necessary. While few would debate the necessity of repairing a cleft palate or reconstructing an ear, procedures such as breast augmentations are questionable. Read more on TruTV…

George Clooney: Sexiest man alive and itinerant ball ironer. Yes, that’s right, George Clooney (pictured joyfully showing off his scrotal superiority) has sparked a new trend in testicle management, telling the Italian magazine Max that he’d had his balls “ironed out.” This isn’t the first time he’s mentioned de-wrinkling his testicles — he made a similar joke to Esquire magazine in 2008. And while we’re pretty sure Clooney was a zillion percent joking, ball-ironing has now become an actual thing at many spas around the country. (*Bangs head against desk*) Keep reading »
