Today’s Lady News: Indiana Votes To Defund Planned Parenthood

  • Indiana’s state legislature voted yesterday to defund Planned Parenthood from roughly $3 million in family planning money. The state receives the funding from Title X, which allocates federal funds to family planning clinics, and uses it in eight of Indiana’s 28 Planned Parenthoods in the state. Conservatives are upset that Planned Parenthood clinics get federal money and provide abortions, even though they are barred by Title X from spending the federal money on abortions. Governor Mitch Daniels now has one week to either veto the legislation or sign it into law. I hope he thinks of the low-income women who would be most impacted by this legislation and does the right thing. [Politico]
  • The Washington Redskins’ Albert Haynesworth was offered a plea deal in a sexual abuse case where he allegedly slid his credit card into the bra of a waitress at the W Hotel in Washington and then touched her boob. When security confronted him, he reportedly said, “I didn’t touch her … [I don't] even like black girls.” When Haynesworth was interviewed by police, according to court documents, he said, “I know what this is about, she is just upset I have a white girlfriend. I couldn’t tell you the last time I dated a black girl. She was trying to get with me.” Haynesworth’s lawyer said the football player will continue fighting the charge. Oh, Lordy, Lordy, Lordy. • Kansas’ proposed state budget aims to remove $300K in federal funding away from family planning services at Planned Parenthood and redirect them to clinics elsewhere — all because Planned Parenthood clinics provide abortions. Planned Parenthood also provides Pap smears, contraceptives, STD testing, and other medical services for women — Low-income women would be most impacted by the cut in federal funding. This nonsense has to stop, people. For real. [Kansas.com]

Did you know you could get your annual Pap smear at Walgreens? Yes! The stirrups are right over in aisle two next to the Pond’s skin cream and the Bonne Bell lip gloss. And breast exams? Right near the AAA batteries, please.

At least that’s what you might think if you watch “Fox & Friends” and believe every word they say. They were trying to justify the Republicans’ attempts to defund family planning money from Planned Parenthood because, duh, all women’s reproductive health needs can be met at the local Walgreens.

Stephen Colbert did a hilarious bit about this the other night on “The Colbert Report,” which you simply must watch. (Language NSFW, use headphones.) But now a group of feminist activists are planning actions to highlight this ignorance. Yup, you guessed it — they’re asking people to go to Walgreens and ask for a Pap smear. Keep reading »

7 Things To Know About The Government Shutdown Over Planned Parenthood

“The moving target is focused on women in America.”

That was Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to reporters this morning as he addressed the threat of a government shutdown over an inability by Republicans and Democrats to reach a deal on the budget. The main piece of contention? Funding for Title X, which allocates funds for family planning services, including those offered by Planned Parenthood. The issue? Even though Title X funds don’t cover them, Planned Parenthood provides abortions.

In simple, basic terms, let’s recap seven things you need to know about the threat of a governmental shutdown: Keep reading »

Seven things to know about the government shutdown of Planned Parenthood. Read More »

While physical threats against anyone are never acceptable, something about a feisty old lady threatening to castrate a politician is kinda amusing. The FBI recently investigated an 80-something Connecticut woman after she made a phone call to an unnamed male politician threatening to Lorena Bobbitt his weenie. Why would she do such a thing? Because he supports efforts by Republicans in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood over abortion. Cops and local police descended upon her home, but determined that she was simply an impassioned former Planned Parenthood volunteer who was not serious about carrying out her dick-chopping threat. Whew. Calm down a little, granny! Violence never solves anything. Nevertheless, every busybody man in Congress just clamped his legs shut. [New Haven Register] Keep reading »

I Have Sex

I’m loving this “I Have Sex” video by a bunch of Wesleyan students. Last month the House of Representatives, led by a lovely bunch of social conservatives hellbent on ruining access to safe, legal abortions any way possible, voted to de-fund Planned Parenthood. This is crazytalk to anyone who’s ever gone to Planned Parenthood for the Pill or a Pap smear or to get a strange lump in your breast checked out. Sexual health is not something anyone should have to gamble with. Attention, conservatives: people have sex! [YouTube] Keep reading »
