Mitt Romney must think low-income women don’t really need breast exams. And those Pap smears that could detect cervical cancer? So frivolous! Surely that’s the only thing the GOP frontrunner could have meant when he told folks in Missouri he would “get rid of” Planned Parenthood, as well as a number of other programs, to reduce the debt. “The test is pretty simple. Is the program so critical, it’s worth borrowing money from China to pay for it?” Romney said. “And on that basis of course you get rid of Obamacare, that’s the easy one. Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that. The subsidy for Amtrak, I’d eliminate that. The National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities.” Keep reading »

The best part about the Girl Scouts’ dramatic unmasking by a Republican lawmaker in Indiana as a “tactical arm of Planned Parenthood” is that the Scouts can now be honest about all their delicious cookie offerings.  [Team Coco]

Oh, my Girl Scout years. Swabbing each other’s cervixes. Examining each other’s breasts for strange lumps. Aborting each other’s unborn children. Those were the days!

Well, not anymore. Thanks, Rep. Bob Morris of Fort Wayne, Indiana, for blowing the lid off our cover: Girl Scout troops were once able to perform pelvic exams and prescribe herpes medication in peace, but now the groups have been outed as “a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood” by Rep. Morris. How did Rep. Morris learn all our secrets? From Googling, of course! (Or as he put it, “a small amount of web-based research.” Rather small, I should say.) As we all know everything you read on on the Internet is true, Rep. Morris was fully in the right to inform his fellow Republican colleagues in a letter on Sunday that he refused to support a resolution celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts because it encourages sex and promotes homosexuality.

Damn. And they were hiding it so well. [NY Daily News]

Today’s Lady News: Komen For The Cure Insider Tells All About Planned Parenthood Tomfoolery

  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s VP Karen Handel, a former politician who ran on an anti-abortion platform and was endorsed by Sarah Palin, allegedly drove Komen’s decision last week to halt grants to Planned Parenthood, which were used to pay for breast exams for low-income women. An inside source at Komen has told the Huffington Post that Karen Handel herself came up with the plan of how to stop the funding: blame it on an “investigation” by an anti-abortion politician into whether Planned Parenthood uses public money to pay for abortions, which is illegal. Susan G. Komen for the Cure was swiftly rebuked last week for halting the grants and announced two days later the current grants would continue. [Huffington Post]
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is launching a Women In Public Service Project (WPSP) at five women’s colleges — Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Wellesley — to get more women working in public service and create a 50/50 parity by 2050. [Women's Media Center] Keep reading »

Susan G. Komen Gun Proves They Can’t Reverse The Stigma They Created

The Susan G. Komen Foundation used to stand for something good, but their techniques of late — and especially their decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood – have made many of us question any of their motives at all. And even though they announced today that they will continue funding Planned Parenthood, the damage is done.

Yes, Komen has caved under the enormous pressure from most of America, but no matter what founder Nancy Brinker CLAIMS, the original decision was made for political reasons and has tarnished them forever. Because of the decision, all of the hypocritical decisions they have made have come to light. And it’s mind blowing. Keep reading »
