Did you know you could get your annual Pap smear at Walgreens? Yes! The stirrups are right over in aisle two next to the Pond’s skin cream and the Bonne Bell lip gloss. And breast exams? Right near the AAA batteries, please.

At least that’s what you might think if you watch “Fox & Friends” and believe every word they say. They were trying to justify the Republicans’ attempts to defund family planning money from Planned Parenthood because, duh, all women’s reproductive health needs can be met at the local Walgreens.

Stephen Colbert did a hilarious bit about this the other night on “The Colbert Report,” which you simply must watch. (Language NSFW, use headphones.) But now a group of feminist activists are planning actions to highlight this ignorance. Yup, you guessed it — they’re asking people to go to Walgreens and ask for a Pap smear. Keep reading »

7 Things To Know About The Government Shutdown Over Planned Parenthood

“The moving target is focused on women in America.”

That was Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to reporters this morning as he addressed the threat of a government shutdown over an inability by Republicans and Democrats to reach a deal on the budget. The main piece of contention? Funding for Title X, which allocates funds for family planning services, including those offered by Planned Parenthood. The issue? Even though Title X funds don’t cover them, Planned Parenthood provides abortions.

In simple, basic terms, let’s recap seven things you need to know about the threat of a governmental shutdown: Keep reading »

Seven things to know about the government shutdown of Planned Parenthood. Read More »

While physical threats against anyone are never acceptable, something about a feisty old lady threatening to castrate a politician is kinda amusing. The FBI recently investigated an 80-something Connecticut woman after she made a phone call to an unnamed male politician threatening to Lorena Bobbitt his weenie. Why would she do such a thing? Because he supports efforts by Republicans in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood over abortion. Cops and local police descended upon her home, but determined that she was simply an impassioned former Planned Parenthood volunteer who was not serious about carrying out her dick-chopping threat. Whew. Calm down a little, granny! Violence never solves anything. Nevertheless, every busybody man in Congress just clamped his legs shut. [New Haven Register] Keep reading »

I Have Sex

I’m loving this “I Have Sex” video by a bunch of Wesleyan students. Last month the House of Representatives, led by a lovely bunch of social conservatives hellbent on ruining access to safe, legal abortions any way possible, voted to de-fund Planned Parenthood. This is crazytalk to anyone who’s ever gone to Planned Parenthood for the Pill or a Pap smear or to get a strange lump in your breast checked out. Sexual health is not something anyone should have to gamble with. Attention, conservatives: people have sex! [YouTube] Keep reading »

Bunny In A Blender: Anti-Abortion Group’s New Scare Tactic

Anti-abortion group The American Life League has released a new video in support of Congress defunding Planned Parenthood and it wants you to think that a doctor scraping an eight-week-old bunch of cells from a uterus is just like slaughtering a cute animal in a blender. Yep, a person dressed in hospital scrubs places a bunny in a blender, the screen goes black, the blender whirs, and the camera pans to a several-months-old Caucasian baby. Nuanced! My first thought was something that my Token Pro-Life Catholic Friend said to me about how he is against abortion because it’s “an act of violence.” Huh? I don’t see women’s health supporters using imagery so cruel. [YouTube via Feministing] Keep reading »

Girl Talk: Why I Stand With Planned Parenthood

This is not a story of how abortion is right or wrong. Nor is it about what other people are doing with their bodies, or what I think about that (as though it’s any of my business). No: this is just my story of how Planned Parenthood made some hard times a little easier for me, and how “real” healthcare (i.e., via insurance plans) can make things difficult. Keep reading »
