Oh, my Girl Scout years. Swabbing each other’s cervixes. Examining each other’s breasts for strange lumps. Aborting each other’s unborn children. Those were the days!
Well, not anymore. Thanks, Rep. Bob Morris of Fort Wayne, Indiana, for blowing the lid off our cover: Girl Scout troops were once able to perform pelvic exams and prescribe herpes medication in peace, but now the groups have been outed as “a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood” by Rep. Morris. How did Rep. Morris learn all our secrets? From Googling, of course! (Or as he put it, “a small amount of web-based research.” Rather small, I should say.) As we all know everything you read on on the Internet is true, Rep. Morris was fully in the right to inform his fellow Republican colleagues in a letter on Sunday that he refused to support a resolution celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts because it encourages sex and promotes homosexuality.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation used to stand for something good, but their techniques of late — and especially their decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood – have made many of us question any of their motives at all. And even though they announced today that they will continue funding Planned Parenthood, the damage is done.
Yes, Komen has caved under the enormous pressure from most of America, but no matter what founder Nancy Brinker CLAIMS, the original decision was made for political reasons and has tarnished them forever. Susan G. Komen for the Cure just released a statement this morning announcing it will reverse its decision to defund Planned Parenthood and continue to fund breast exams for women who otherwise could not afford them. I wonder how many PR wonks burned the midnight oil writing this up.
The statement references how grants to Planned Parenthood were halted by Komen because the organization is “under investigation,” although, as the blog Reproductive Health Reality Check points out, yesterday Komen denied the defunding had anything to do with the investigation. It does not go into detail about how the “investigation” is actually just some BS from anti-abortion politician Rep. Cliff Stearns, who wants make sure that no public money has been spent on abortion, which is illegal. (You can read more about that here.) The statement also doesn’t address how the recent hiring of Karen Handel as Senior Vice President of Public Policy, a former candidate for governor of Georgia who ran on an anti-abortion platform. But no, Susan G. Komen assures us, yanking funding from Planned Parenthood had nothing to do with politics at all!

Last night, the website for Susan G. Komen for the Cure was hacked! According to The Atlantic Wire, visitors were redirected to a dummy site with a mocked up page reading, “Help us run over poor women on our way to the bank.” Oh, burn. Obviously the hack is in response to Komen’s decision on Tuesday to halt grants to Planned Parenthood that gave breast exams to women that could otherwise not afford them, after caving to pressure from anti-abortion activists, including an anti-abortion ex-politician who now works for Komen. (However, I was pleased to read this morning that one of Komen’s top public health officials, Mollie Williams, resigned in protest over the decision to defund Planned Parenthood.) I have a five-year-old daughter, and I’m pregnant with my second child. I know when my children are older, I will be taking them to events like the one I went to with my mom.
