  • Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire behind Bloomberg financial services and the mayor of New York City, announced today he would donate up to $250,000 in matching gifts to Planned Parenthood to make up most of what was halted from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure grants, which stopped earlier this week. The Komen foundation said it would not be granting money, which went to breast cancer screenings, because the clinics are being investigated at the behest of an anti-abortion Republican politician. Susan G. Komen for the Cure also recently hired a VP who ran for governor of Georgia on an anti-abortion platform and was endorsed by Sarah Palin. In a statement, Mayor Bloomberg said: “Politics have no place in health care. Breast cancer screening saves lives and hundreds of thousands of women rely on Planned Parenthood for access to care. We should be helping women access that care, not placing barriers in their way.” You can donate to Planned Parenthood here. Let’s secure that $250K! [New York Times]

Susan G. Komen For The Cure Web Site Was Hacked Last Night

Komen hack photo

Last night, the website for Susan G. Komen for the Cure was hacked! According to The Atlantic Wire, visitors were redirected to a dummy site with a mocked up page reading, “Help us run over poor women on our way to the bank.” Oh, burn. Obviously the hack is in response to Komen’s decision on Tuesday to halt grants to Planned Parenthood that gave breast exams to women that could otherwise not afford them, after caving to pressure from anti-abortion activists, including an anti-abortion ex-politician who now works for Komen. (However, I was pleased to read this morning that one of Komen’s top public health officials, Mollie Williams, resigned in protest over the decision to defund Planned Parenthood.) Nevertheless, what an awesome hack. Don’t f**k with women’s health!  [The Atlantic Wire, The Atlantic Wire]

Today’s Lady News: Susan G. Komen Cancer Charity Halts Grants To Planned Parenthood

  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the charity synonymous with breast cancer research, has halted grants to Planned Parenthood — seemingly caving to pressure from anti-abortion activists who have the nationwide clinics under investigation. Susan G. Komen grants mainly were used for breast exams (and other breast health services) for women who otherwise could not afford them. But anti-abortion groups have targeted those charitable donations because some Planned Parenthood clinics also perform abortions. A CEO of a Planned Parenthood in Virginia, which received a 2010 grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, told the AP, “We’re kind of reeling … cancer doesn’t care if you’re pro-choice, anti-choice, progressive, conservative.” [Washington Post]

“I’ve been a Planned Parenthood supporter my whole life — since my mom took me to a rally when I was in sixth grade. It’s chilling to think of this resource being taken away. I have a five-year-old daughter, and I’m pregnant with my second child. I know when my children are older, I will be taking them to events like the one I went to with my mom. I hope we’ll be celebrating our freedoms and rights, not fighting for them once again as we are now.”
Maggie Gyllenhaal penned a piece for Glamour magazine about her support for reproductive rights. She says her mother taught her and her brother Jake to always fight for what they believe in and she believes “every woman has the right to decide what she can do with her body.” I’m impressed a big Hollywood celeb like Maggie is taking the time to support Planned Parenthood; PP is one of the main providers of women’s health treatments like cervical cancer screenings and breast exams for low-income women, who might otherwise go without. Between that and this, can we all just agree Maggie Gyllenhaal is the best?  [Glamour]

Today’s Lady News: How To Discuss Abortion Over Thanksgiving With Your Relatives

  • We all have relatives with whom we disagree on political or social issues. Mine is my dad. We, however, can spar in a friendly way about Barack Obama (him) and Fox News (me) and everyone is still pleasant at the end of the day. Not all families are so lucky, though. That’s why Planned Parenthood has created this cool list of eight easy steps for discussing reproductive rights over the holidays. It’s filled with talking points on how to engage family members in conversation about abortion, the morning-after pill, and sex ed — instead of fighting. [PlannedParenthood.org]
  • The European Union has refused to release a film called “In-Justice: The Story Of Afghan Women In Jail,” which it commissioned, because it said two of the subjects’ lives will be in danger if it does. One woman is doing 12 years in prison for being a rape victim; the other is in jail for leaving her abusive husband. [Yahoo Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Planned Parenthood Ends Abortion At 3 Arizona Clinics

  • Planned Parenthood will no longer provide medical abortions (i.e. the abortion pill) at clinics in Prescott Valley, Flagstaff, and Yuma due to new state laws that restrict the practice. Anti-abortion advocates wanted clinics that do medical abortions, which involves swallowing a pill, to have the same clinic set-up and equipment as the clinics that perform abortion as surgery. Arizona women will now only be allowed to get medical abortions at the Phoenix and Tucson clinics, which are the only two clinics to do surgical abortions as well. [NPR]

Today’s Lady News: New Hampshire Planned Parenthood Stops Dispensing Birth Control

  • Planned Parenthood of New Hampshire has stopped dispensing birth control because of budgetary issues. The state government, upset that Planned Parenthood clinics provide abortions, naturally yanked funding from the clinics, preventing them from providing services which could prevent women from having abortions. It makes so much sense. [Concord Monitor]

How Indiana’s Planned Parenthood Will Cope With Defunding

In the past few months, three states have enacted new laws to strip their Planned Parenthod clinics of funding. State and federal funds never paid for abortions because they are prohibited to do so by federal law. Alas, conservative politicians in Indiana, Kansas and North Carolina want to punish Planeed Parenthoods for providing abortions at all.

What are the consequences of this low-down, dirty, anti-women move? Employees lose their jobs and other services get cut. The Indianpolis Star checked in with the Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana and the $1.3 million in budget cuts — about 1/10th of its budget — are depressing. Keep reading »
