This Is My Body

“If I choose to have sex, I have the right to birth control and to be spared the demeaning insults that you’d never want leveled against your daughter or mother. My pursuit of orgasm is neither unnatural nor dangerous nor scary nor an infringement of your religious liberty. My sexual activity exists for my benefit, not your pleasure. And it’s never my fault if you rape me. I am done being excluded from decisions about my sexual and reproductive health. This is my body. Not yours.”

Tell it, sisters! This video is so kickass. I love the part at the end that goes, “Do not be afraid of a world in which women know themselves.” Definitely worth watching and sharing around. [Care2 via Facebook.com/ThisIsMyBody]

Republican Proposes Yet Even More Restrictions On Birth Control

Today's Lady News photo
  • Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT) plans to propose a spending bill that would allow employers to deny health insurance coverage for birth control and other contraception based on the employer’s own “moral reasons.” Rehberg’s proposed bill would also federally defund Planned Parenthood until the organization no longer provides abortions (despite the fact PP does not use federal funds to pay for abortions). Oy, vey. Here we go again. [SlateThink Progress]

WTF Chart: Men Overwhelmingly Quoted In Media About Women’s Rights, Abortion & Birth Control

This is a chart made by the media watchdog group 4thEstate.net about the numbers of women and men quoted in the media in print and on TV on women’s issues. As you can read about in more detail on 4th Estate’s site, regardless of the publication or show, men’s voices still over-represent even when the issue being discussed is women’s rights, abortion, birth control or attacks on Planned Parenthood.

The chart itself requires little explanation. The questions it arises? Those are endless. [4thEstate.net]

PA Lawmaker To Introduce Legislation Seeking To Defund Planned Parenthood

Today's Lady News photo
  • A Republican state representative in Pennsylvania will introduce legislation tomorrow that seeks to defund Planned Parenthood. Rep. Daryl Metcalfe’s bill would prioritize health clinics that provide abortion services below ones which do not, which would mean that PP would be deprived of state and federal funds. Those funds are used to provide PP’s other services, including cancer prevention and prescriptions. [Huffington Post]
  • The civil lawsuit against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss Kahn, who was accused of sexually assaulting a New York City hotel maid one year ago, will hold its next hearing in the Bronx on June 11. The Bronx is where the victim, Nafissatou Diallo, lives. Criminal charges were dropped against DSK after prosecutors said Diallo was not trustworthy. [New York Post]

Today’s Lady News: Judge Rules Texas Can’t Withhold Funding From Planned Parenthood

Today's Lady News photo
  • A federal judge ruled today that a new Texas law banning Planned Parenthood from receiving state funds through its Women’s Health Program — so targeted because it provides abortion services in addition to cancer screenings, etc. — is unconstitutional. In his ruling, the judge noted, “The court is particularly influenced by the potential for immediate loss of access to necessary medical services by several thousand Texas women.” An injunction will be applied against the law until further notice. [CBS News]

Planned Parenthood Believes It’s The Target Of A Sting Operation By Anti-Choicers

Planned Parenthood Federation of America clinics in 11 states have reported a string of suspicious incidents where women come in asking questions about sex-selective abortions, leading the organization to believe it’s being targeted with a “hoax” by an anti-abortion sting operation.

Women claiming to be pregnant came into clinics over two dozen times, asking provocative questions about sex-selective abortion, the Huffington Post reports. (Patient confidentiality prevents PPFA from identifying the clinics.) The women asked questions like how soon they could find out the gender of their fetus and whether they could schedule an abortion if they were expecting a girl. Keep reading »

Meet The Guy Who Bombed The Wisconsin Planned Parenthood Clinic Sunday Night

francis grady photo

Meet Francis Grady, 50, anti-abortion extremist. On Sunday night, he decided the best way to prevent unwanted pregnancies from being terminated at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, was to place a handmade bomb outside their window sill. The explosive device caused a small fire and the PP clinic had to close for one day. During a preliminary hearing yesterday regarding the clinic violence, Grady interrupted the U.S. Magistrate Judge to ask, “Do you even care at all about the 1,000 babies that died screaming?”  Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Wisconsin Planned Parenthood Clinic Bombing Suspect Arrested

  • Wisconsin police have arrested a suspect in Sunday night’s bombing of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute. The man’s identity and charges against him are as-of-yet unclear. A handmade explosive device was placed on a windowsill at the clinic and caused a small fire. The Grand Chute clinic closed on Monday but reopened today. UPDATE, 1:40p.m.: Mother Jones is reporting the clinic is “temporarily closed” and the FBI has joined an investigation into the bombing. [Mother Jones]

An explosive blew up at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute, Wisconsin last night at around 7:30 p.m. Police say a homemade bomb was placed on a windowsill outside the Appleton North Health Clinic. It started a fire that burned itself out but still caused damage to the building. No one was hurt.

Intimidation tactics like this are nothing short of domestic terrorism, intent on scaring the employees of abortion clinics from doing their jobs. Thank you to the women and men who work at these clinics and put themselves at risk for clinic violence every day.

Mitt Romney must think low-income women don’t really need breast exams. And those Pap smears that could detect cervical cancer? So frivolous! Surely that’s the only thing the GOP frontrunner could have meant when he told folks in Missouri he would “get rid of” Planned Parenthood, as well as a number of other programs, to reduce the debt. “The test is pretty simple. Is the program so critical, it’s worth borrowing money from China to pay for it?” Romney said. “And on that basis of course you get rid of Obamacare, that’s the easy one. Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that. The subsidy for Amtrak, I’d eliminate that. The National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities.” Keep reading »
