Abortion Protestor Or Satirist?

If this man, spotted protesting outside of a Planned Parenthood, is purposefully turning his sign upside down, then he is the world’s most gifted satirist. If not, someone should tell him that we can’t read his anti-abortion message. [Jezebel]

Connie Britton Teams Up With Planned Parenthood For Limited Edition T-Shirt

What would Tami Taylor do? Stand with Texas women, of course. The “Friday Night Lights” and “Nashville” star has joined Planned Parenthood in promoting a limited edition T-shirt referencing her FNL character supporting the pro-choice women of Texas. In a Planned Parenthood’s press release about the shirts, Britton says:

“The character Tami on ‘Friday Night Lights’ is a Texas woman deeply committed to her community and to standing up for what is right for her neighbors and the people she loves. I have been inspired by how people around the country have united to stand with the women of Texas, and I can’t help but think that, in this moment, we all have the opportunity to join with and become strong, powerful Texas men and women.”

The limited edition T-shirts, which come in orange and white, are available online only through the month of July so you’d better snag yours here now. So, when a movie is made about Texas’ feminist army and their work fighting Senate Bill 5 — which would all but obliterate Texas’ women’s access to abortion — Britton is a shoe-in to play state Senator Wendy Davis right? Man Vandalizes Indiana Planned Parenthood With An Ax

Today's Lady News photo
  • A 27-year-old man vandalized the Planned Parenthood clinic in Bloomington, Indiana, with an ax and splashed the clinic with red paint this morning. According to police, he targeted Planned Parenthood “due to abortions being performed there. He stated his intent was to damage the building because they ‘kill’ and ‘murder’ babies. He attributed his actions to his religious beliefs.” Clinic violence is domestic terrorism and it is scary. [IndyStar]

Not only is Hillary Clinton creating a frenzy of 2016 election speculation and my favorite internet memes, but she’s also brought blood clots into the media spotlight. While the buzz has gone down, and you rarely hear commentators on CNN analyzing deep leg thrombosis anymore, the incident stuck with me. I, too, have blood clots.

In April of 2012, an unusual set of symptoms put my dear Bubbe, a retired oncology nurse, into a strange panic. She demanded daily, “Go see a doctor!”, as she was increasingly worried about my high fever, swollen glands and other symptoms that were unbeknownst to me as signs of lymphoma.

I, of course, remained completely ignorant of what my illness could be, only calling the doctor to avoid incessant nudging that had now spread to my mother. You’ll do anything promptly at the urging of two Jewish women.

It was only when my doctor told my grandmother it was not what she feared that I finally realized what all the fuss was about. I burst into tears and exhaled a sigh of relief all in the span of about five minutes in the waiting room, before I was strapped in for a series of precautionary blood tests. Keep reading »

Lady! You There! I Make Medical Choices For You!

A federal appeals court ruled yesterday that Texas is now allowed to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood clinics that participate in Texas’ Women’s Health Program. Planned Parenthood performs abortions, which the state opposes, and therefore they are allowed to defund the clinics.

The program helps roughly 130,00 low-income women with health care; it aids women who would not qualify for Medicaid unless they are pregnant. The WHP has always funded Planned Parenthood clinics in the past; its mandate is not to fund “abortion-providing entities” and Planned Parenthood got around that by creating a separate legal entity to accept the funds to use for non-abortion health care. The state knew that and funded the clinics anyway. But then the state of Texas decided it was more de riguer and keeping with the times to defund Planned Parenthood over all this. It rewrote language saying WHP funding couldn’t even go to abortion-providing affiliates. Keep reading »

Did you know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime?

This astonishingly high statistic is one of the many things I learned about breast health at Planned Parenthood’s Breast Health Initiative briefing yesterday. Surrounded by some incredibly influential and inspirational women, including Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards and actress/activist Gabrielle Union, I was informed about the lives that screenings have already saved and the ways in which Planned Parenthood is expanding their services. God bless America, the land where you can resign from your job in shame after doing something douchey and then turn around and blame it on the victim of your attack.  I speak, of course, of Karen Handel, an anti-abortion ex-politician and former executive of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, who resigned in February after attempting to defund Planned Parenthood. Although Komen’s grants were only used for cancer screenings, PP was targeted because some clinics perform abortions.

Handel has signed a deal with Simon & Schuster for a book called Planned Bullyhood, out in September. Planned Bullyhood, huh? Because giving Pap smears to low-income women who have no other health care options is so bullying! “Glee” should do a dance number! Get Lady Gaga on the phone! Anti-abortion activists were born this way! Keep reading »

gay rights

Next month the Democratic National Convention will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Democratic delegates will nominate President Barack Obama for their candidate. Such events are not just about nominating a candidate, though, but an overall PR blitz for their party’s values.

Politico has seen drafts (“a starting point”) of convention-planning documents describing the DNC’s alleged plans, most notable of which will include pairs of individuals discussing Obama’s policies in comparison to Mitt Romney’s. But it is the precise people they suggest that leaves a slightly bad taste in my mouth. Instead of a gay couple — the documents explicitly say “not a gay couple” — one pair will be a “parent and a gay son or daughter.” Another pair, who will discuss Planned Parenthood, will be a “husband who talks about how a Pap smear saved his wife’s life,” as well as his spouse.
