Like any twenty-something middle class white woman with a Pinterest account, I love mason jars. I want to organize and compartmentalize my entire life in a collection of artfully arranged mason jars. I firmly believe there is no such thing as too many mason jars. I will always say yes to mason jars. So when Jarden Home Brands contacted me and asked if I’d like to give their 100th anniversary green mason jars a spin, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Of course I said yes.
I opted for the pint size jars, which are perfectly proportioned to use as drinking glasses, for DIY projects, or storing a wide variety of foods, cosmetics, toiletries, or large spiders that you don’t want to kill but are too scared to put outside. The green tint is so eye-catching and ideal for decorating around the house. Also they’re made in the USA. What’s not to love?
Here is a brief sampling of the ways I’ve used my mason jars so far, none of which are earth-shatteringly original, but damn if these things aren’t versatile: Keep reading »
Imagine this: you and your boo are cruisin’ down the highway with the windows down, summer heat warms your face while Lana del Ray’s “West Coast” blasts from the stereo. 2013 was a year of enormous personal upheaval for me. I met my life partner and married him just five months later at City Hall. I lost a friend to suicide. I distanced myself from people who weren’t proving themselves to be interested in the caliber of friendship that I want to invest in. I made huge strides in standing up for myself and not taking other people’s bullshit — a lot of which had to do with the wedding.
Most of the changes that occurred were ultimately good for me. At least, that’s how I choose to look at them. All of the changes, though, required me to get out of my comfort zone in order to figure out what was right for me. I’ve always been a risktaker, but this year felt especially poignant. There are people who are worried that Barbies give little girls unrealistic expectations about their bodies.
Then there are people who are worried that when Barbie’s clothes come off, she is naked.
Justin and Cassity, the bloggers behind the DIY remodeling blog Remodelaholic*, are those people. I came across their “No More Naked Barbies!!! Tutorial” on Pinterest, assuming it would be yet another pin about how to make DIY doll clothes for American Girl dolls, Bitty Babies, or Barbies. Then I noticed the hashtag #modest. Keep reading »
