Frisky Q&A: Secrets In Lace Co-Founder Daniel Whitsett On Classic Looks, Body Positivity & Vintage Style Icons

Daniel Whitsett

Lingerie brand Secrets In Lace turns back the clock to a time when lingerie was beautifully made to last. The brand is the world’s largest seller of 100% nylon stockings, which are manufactured on the same machines once used to make the high-quality stockings of the 1950′s. Secrets In Lace also sells garter belts, bullet bras, and countless other vintage-inspired pieces (including designs inspired by Bettie Page and Dita von Teese) that are made with functionality in mind – just like they were in the 50′s and 60′s. I love the idea of spending my days toiling through the modern world in a modern dress with a classic garter belt underneath that nobody knows about but me. It’s definitely a refreshing trade-up from today’s trendy, poorly made tights that I so frequently fall victim to at the mall. The company’s first store opened in Virginia 1984 and expanded to a mail order operation in 1995, which launched it into a worldwide legend. There is something so undeniably elegant about this type of lingerie and it’s amazing to see such an important a piece of sartorial history preserved in a world that tends to favor the next big (and cheaply made) thing. Daniel Whitsett, president and co-founder of Secrets In Lace, answered a few of our burning questions about the brand’s curvy models, what makes nylons stockings so special, and how to choose quality lingerie. This Vintage Pin-Up Runway Show Is The Stuff Fashion Dreams Are Made Of

This year’s Lingerie Fashion Week in New York coincided with the 75th anniversary of the invention of nylon stockings, and the pin-up inspired lingerie line Secrets In Lace celebrated with a vintage runway show and burlesque performance. From the sounds of it, the show was the kind of fashion celebration vintage dreams are made of — models walked the runway to live jazz music, burlesque star Angie Pontani performed, and a host of curvy models rocked Dita Von Teese’s nylon line, which is manufactured on the machines that created the original nylon stockings of the 1940s. It’s so refreshing to see a fashion show that highlights the female body as is without the body image-crushing restrictions of most modern runways. Hey There, Sailor: The Best Pin-up Girl Looks For Fleet Week

Hey there, sailor…it’s Fleet Week in NYC! It’s that time of year when even girls who swear they don’t dig dudes in uniform realize they are hard-pressed to resist the all American charm of nautical men.

If you are so inclined to do your patriotic duty and show one of these boys around town, we do not suggest wearing nautical-themed clothes. A night out on the town with a sailor while wearing a nautical outfit is a bit too much camp, even for us. This year we are thinking that a blast from the past of the best pin-up girl looks from the ’50s are the best bet for setting sea-faring hearts aflutter. Keep reading »

Goodyear’s Golden Girl

Just like good tires, you can get a lot of smooth rides out of a good woman. Well, that’s what Goodyear’s new Italian ad is claiming. A silver fox, wearing nothing but a mink stole and a “come hither” smile, poses like a pin-up next to the slogan, “The only thing in your truck that never gets old.” We basically want to grow up to be her. [Ad Week] Keep reading »
