Everyone knows that prescription pills are available to anyone looking for them, if you know how to search online. Not that it’s a legal means—but abusing prescription painkillers isn’t all that lawful to begin with. A year or two ago, we all heard about people buying the no-joke acne medicine, Accutane, online—without a prescription or monthly blood tests to monitor your liver health—and drug abuse took a whole new turn into beauty-land. Now, The Daily Mail is reporting internet pill abuse has hit an all new, um, high, and it’s all in the name of beauty. The fight to be skinnier, prettier and clearer-skinned knows no bounds, apparently. We all know buying anything off the internet or eBay comes with a certain level of danger—you always wonder, is it the real deal? Is It Becoming More Acceptable to Talk About Drug Abuse?

For as long as I can remember, drugs have mystified me. It started with the movie “Mask” starring Eric Stoltz as a 16-year old boy with a major facial deformity and Cher as his cokehead, biker chic mother. In my 7-year-old mind I attributed Eric Stoltz’s facial deformity to Cher’s use of cocaine during her pregnancy. Don’t ask how I arrived at this conclusion. Well, I was after all a child of the D.A.R.E. generation after all. I would lay awake at night scared about all of the people out there using cocaine. Worrying that they would have a generation of babies with deformed faces. By the time I reached high school (I knew that cocaine didn’t cause facial deformities anymore), I was soo spun out on the anti-drug message that I had no interest in thinking about let alone trying drugs save the occasional marijuana cigarette. Debate This: Psychiatric Medications & Their Positive And Negative Effects

Last week I wrote a blog post about the 10 Ways To Survive The First Week Of Heartbreak. Just to be clear, these tips referenced the things that helped me personally during that rough week and certainly should not be taken as gospel for every single person reading The Frisky. I mean, that would be kind of unfair to those of you who are not within driving distance of an amusement park that throws a Gay Night party every year! Jokes aside, I also did not intend to imply that “popping pills” was something everyone should run out and do. In the interest of full-disclosure, I’ve been on anti-d’s (as we call ‘em) for the last year and a half (for a variety of reasons, in conjunction with talk therapy), so I didn’t just start taking them because my lame-o fiance dumped me. That said, I do know that being on them helped me get through that first week (and continue to help me get through the second and third).

The comments and emails we received that were concerned I was too flippantly recommending that the heartbroken should pop pills (truthfully, just a shout out to Jacqueline Susann!) made me think we should address the issue in depth.
