Yoko Ono’s breasts, a model’s ass, and a vagina are front in center at an art show in Paris. It would be just another day in the art world if the person behind it wasn’t one of hip hop’s greatest assets. Which begs the question: Does Pharrell Williams have a woman problem?
The Oscar-nominated musician was recently tapped to curate a modern art show at Galerie Perrotin in Le Marais section of the City of Lights. I was rather excited to check it out on the recommendation of a friend. The show is called “G I R L,” taking its name from Pharrell’s recent album. The themes, according to press coverage in the art world, are a celebration of femininity and of women.
The exhibit featured 37 artists — 18 of them women, including Tracey Emin, Cindy Sherman, Sophie Calle. Marina Abramovic, and pieces by the Guerrilla Girls critical of women’s exclusion from the upper echelons of the art world. It might sound crazy what I’m about to say … but the video for Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” is a bit creepy without any music. Here are parts of the video with Pharrell and others singing the song without any musical backing, which sounds less like a cappella than you would expect. I’m fairly certain that this is how musical numbers on TV shows and movies are formed — actors sing the song live, but the real singing and musical accompaniment is added later — but I didn’t realize it could be done for music videos, too. If you’ve been anywhere with a radio these past few months, you know Pharrell’s song “Happy” has started something of a movement. He sat down with Oprah Winfrey and watched a clip of how his song has touched people all over the world. He can’t help but cry some happy tears! Oprah tends to have that effect. “It’s overwhelming because I love what I do and I appreciate the fact that people have believed in me so long to the point [where I can] feel that,” he cries. For the past year, Paris-based art director David Redon has been contributing a few hours a week to a unique hobby: Photoshopping modern celebrities into vintage advertisements. “I like the shift between vintage and modern pop culture,” he says, “because these days the border between art and commercial is very small, and artists work their images like brands do.” Redon’s handiwork lets us see what it might look like for Don Draper to design an ad campaign starring Rihanna, Drake, Beyonce, or Daft Punk.
