There are few things in life that make my chest seize and my stomach flutter with that inexplicable giddy feeling as much as Pearl Jam. My favorite band since I was 12 years old, I’ve been to a dozen Pearl Jam shows, every single one of them a profound spiritual experience and the best day of my life. The band has been around for over 20+ years, fronted by the enigmatic Eddie Vedder, who turns 50 today. Oh, I’ll find a whole bunch of amazing GIFs of him. Maybe I can even find 50! I thought. And then an hour later, I had 91 GIFs sitting on my desktop. Nine more and I’d have enough for his 100th birthday post. Oops. I managed to whittle them down to 57, but goddammit, I could not bring myself to discard another seven. SUE ME. So here you go. Fifty-seven Ed GIFs in honor of his 50th birthday. Keep reading »
I have a couple of friends with kids who incessantly want to listen to that song “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and usually I feel sorry for them. But today I am feeling envious, because as a child of the ’90s, Pearl Jam is my favorite band of all time and they just performed “Let It Go” at a concert in Italy. So basically I’m jealous that I don’t have a kid obsessed with “Frozen” because if I did, this moment would be opportunity to turn them into fans of the music I like. Or something. [Rolling Stone]
A number of years ago, Eddie Vedder, lead singer of the band Pearl Jam — whose 49th birthday we recently celebrated with 57 GIFs — was out on the water between the Maui and Molokai Hawaiian islands with three friends doing a little sailing, when rough waters overturned their outrigger canoe. Stranded in the ocean, far from shore, Vedder and his friends would have likely drowned if not for some local fishermen rescued them. Earlier this month, the details on that rescue came to light at a Pearl Jam show in Seattle, when Ed introduced Ashley Baxter, the little girl — now a woman — who convinced her father that she heard their cries for help and is the reason they were rescued. Vedder dedicated the song “Future Days,” which was in part inspired by that day on the ocean, to Ashley and her dad. Ashley’s brother Connor, a world champion surfer and windsurfer, wrote even more details about the rescue on his blog. Such a cool story! [Connor Baxter]
This past week was Pearl Jam Week on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” with the band playing both Thursday and Friday nights shows. Javier Bardem was a fellow guest last night, and apparently he and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder have a longtime bromance. Who knew?! In the clip above, Javier and Ed talk about the time Javier came on stage during a show in Spain, and drunkenly addressed the crowd in Spanish, reducing them to tears for reasons Ed didn’t understand and Javier can’t remember.
This weekend is the MTV Video Music Awards, celebrating the year’s best music videos you probably only watched on the web since MTV barely plays video anymore. I have an early suggestion for next year’s Video of the Year: the just released video for Pearl Jam’s new single, “Mind Your Manners,” off their upcoming album, Lightning Bolt. Watch it above — it’s awesome! Natural disasters! Bombs! Eddie Vedder thrashing around! And for nostalgia’s sake, let’s revisit when Pearl Jam won a moon man at the 1993 VMAs for their video for “Jeremy,” after the jump… [Rolling Stone] Keep reading »
This week, Pearl Jam, my favorite band ever, announced that they are embarking on 24-date tour — five of which I will be attending if I get my way — and released their new single, “Mind Your Manners,” off their 10th studio album, Lightning Bolt (out October 15). You can listen to the frenetic, guitar-heavy song above. I’m screaming like a 13-year-old wearing flannel, naturally. [YouTube]
