Miss America Pageant Has Platform To Educate On Domestic Violence, Chooses Victim-Blaming Instead

Miss America
Wrong Question

Given the dismal state of international headlines these past few weeks, the Miss America pageant had a whole host of issues to draw from when putting together the question and answer portion of the competition. The question judge Kathy Ireland asked Miss Florida during the Sunday night competition started off with an impactful topic — Ray Rice’s dismissal from the NFL for beating up then-fiancee Janay Rice (nee Palmer) last February. Things could’ve gone in a powerful direction from there and the pageant could have served as a platform to raise awareness about domestic violence. Instead, Ireland asked the most useless question of all:

“We were all rocked by the video of football star Ray Rice punching his wife Janay. She’s standing by him. As a woman, what do you think of her decision?”

Ugh.

France Wants To Ban “Hypersexual” Kid Beauty Pageants

In what the non-tiara-wearing crowd would call a pretty awesome move, France’s Senate has voted to ban child beauty pageants. Under the measure, which must still be approved by the lower house of parliament, organizing such competitions is prohibited, and anyone who enters a child under the age of 16 in a beauty contest would face as much as two years in prison and $40,000 in fines, the AP reports. The author of the amendment says she is fighting the “hypersexualization” of children. Read more at Newser…

Eden Wood, Age 6, Retires From Pageant Circuit

Most of us were busy solidifying our personalities when we were six, not solidifying our plans for retirement from pageantry. At age six, “Toddlers and Tiaras‘” Eden Wood has eclipsed spray tans and flippers. The little diva feels that her 300 wins on the circuit are enough to launch her into superstardom. She’s onto to bigger and better things in the Biz — a canopy bed collection, a memoir (aptly entitled From Cradle to Crown) , an action figure, a mall tour, and of course, her singing career starting with her singles “Cutie Patootie” and “Under Puppy.” Eh, let Eden go pursue her “destiny” as her manager /mother Mickie puts it. The only “Toddlers and Tiaras” star I care about is Eden’s rival, devil child and Ni Ni enthusiast, Mackenzie. Someone give that child her own show already! [Huffington Post] Keep reading »

Move Over Girlies, Boys Are Taking Over The Pageant Scene

There’s some new pageant competition in town: boys! Over the past five years, the number of tap-dancin’, lip-gloss wearin’, catwalk-workin’ lil’ dudes has doubled. Nearly 10 percent of beauty pageant contestants are male. Yeah, break that glass ceiling, kiddies! While normally, I’d probs take this opportunity to make a few jabs at the whole “Toddlers & Tiaras” superficiality, just seeing this lil’ pageant superstar, Zander Miller, so excited about getting his nails done makes me smile from ear to ear. Everyone needs an outlet of expression—I’m lucky I’ve got The Frisky. So, it’s just fab that children nowadays can be who they are and ignore grownups raising their eyebrows. Work it, boys! We’re rootin’ for ya! [The Hairpin] Keep reading »
