Must Haves: 8 Awesome Oversized Coats

Psst! Let me tell you a secret! The best time to buy a new coat is right now. Since it’s mid-winter, most stores are desperate to get rid of their coat stock, and you can tell by the deep discounts they’re willing to give. We have it on good authority that boxy, oversized coats are going to be so big next season — you can already see them gracing the runways — so we’ve rounded up a bunch of mega-cute, mega-cheap coats on super sale. Get ‘em while they’re hot and it’s still cold!

Must Haves: 10 Super-Warm Coats, Gloves, And Scarves To Get You Through This Winter

It’s been a pretty mild winter so far here in New York, with temperatures rising above 50 just last week … so it seems only karmic that just when we were thinking we could deal with winter at its best, we’re about to get it at its worst. Rumor has it (I go on Weather.com, sometimes) that temperatures are dropping, and a big chill is coming in a big way. If you haven’t invested in some crazy-ugly, crazy-warm winter outerwear and accessories, well, you might want to hit express on that shipping. I know it’s $15. Just do it. The good news: because we’re technically moving into the next season (spring!), tons of these items are on steep sale. The bad news: you’ll have to get your hands on them quick, before a) they sell out and b) the second ice age arrives. Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration, but still. I just hope that when it comes, you’ll have had the foresight to wear these …

Shopping Guide: Lightweight Transitional Jackets

Okay, so it seems like spring is actually coming. We’ve had a few false starts (i.e. the entire winter), but now March is upon us and it’s only a matter of time before we’re breaking out those bathing suits. Just kidding, I won’t be because I hate swimming. I will be breaking out my … cutoffs.

Anyway, we’ve come to that sort of in-between stage where it isn’t truly warm yet you’re still sweating in your peacoat after a few blocks. This is where lightweight outerwear comes in. You can add hefty layers beneath it for warmth on cooler days or boil it down to just a T-shirt on warmer ones. Airy jackets were made for this purpose: the piece should casually wink at early springtime, but it shouldn’t make things traumatic should you get caught in serendipitous downpour (no silk!). Without further ado, here’s my roundup of seven buoyant layers perfectly suited for this transitional time.

Winter manages to waffle somewhere between being my favorite season and my least favorite all at once. I don’t know how this can be. I think I love the idea of it — a fresh layer of snow on the ground, logs on the fire, the omnipresent holiday spirit… I can’t stand fingers numb with cold, a red and runny nose, or the ache in my ear canals from the bitter wind. I don’t even have a fireplace. In actuality, I only really love winter from the safety of my bed. Even better, it’s a safe justification for thinly masked laziness. This winter, though, I have other plans. I’m going to remain fully functional (maybe not as easy as it sounds) and stave off the ten to fifteen pounds that beg to descend upon me every December. These cold weather accessories, namely all things scarf, snood, and shawl, are going to make it possible.

Win This! Gap’s Soft Trench For Spring

Jeggings. Shooties. Jorts. So many hybrid fashion terms, too little time after shopping to memorize them. It’s okay, here’s one worth remembering — FLASHION. Gap is having one a Flashion sale of their own this Saturday March 5th — in-store shoppers will be able to grab this Soft Trench for only $50, nearly $40 off the retail price of $89.95, and just for that one day. WIN THIS! Tell us in the comments what the most ridiculous fashion hybrid item (a la jeggings) you could imagine would be — and what it would be called. Shopping Guide: Anoraks

Thanks to the continuation of the military trend, the anorak is still big this season. Anoraks make staying warm in the fall a no-brainer because the drawstring and loose sleeves make layering easy. As Amelia has already shown, anoraks look hot with a girly dress, but of course are appropriate with jeans or even shorts. Keep reading »
