The song “Falling Slowly,” from the movie “Once,” is one of the most romantic songs ever. (The Academy, which gave them the Oscar for Best Song, would certainly agree!) A lot of us squealed when we learned the actors Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová had a real-life relationship in addition to their big-screen courtship. Calling themselves The Swell Season, Glen and Marta have toured the world performing the same style of low-key folk music everyone loved from “Once.” Now The Swell Season has gotten their own documentary, also called—shocker—”The Swell Season,” that explores the musicians’ lives behind the movie that made them both famous. Women love movies. Dudes love movies too. Unfortunately, women and men don’t always love the same movies — that’s why we once vetoed a dude because he couldn’t see the cinematic power of Fear. When you’ve got a boyfriend or even when you’re just going on a date with someone new, going to the cinema necessitates negotiation. You want emotions and romance and hot guys, he wants explosions, and blood, and protruding limbs. Can we just utter a lil’ sigh? What’s got us most psyched about this year’s Oscars is Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova being nominated for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly”, one of the tunes they penned for Once, a movie they also starred in. The two are together in real life and were handpicked for the roles in the movie, about an Irish musician (Hansard) who makes an album with a Czech women (Irglova) he meets in Dublin. The film is overwhelmingly romantic, without having the slightest bit of sex or even kissing in it. And the soundtrack is amazing. Here’s Hansard and Irglova posing together for an Oscar portrait. We hope they win! [Fox Searchlight] Keep reading »
Besides the opening monologue, the best part about the Academy Awards is the musical performances. My all-time favorite was Three 6 Mafia doing “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp,†from Hustle and Flow. Looking at this cool graphic, it seems like there might be a method for winning an Oscar for Best Song — including the words “love,†“heart,†dance,†or “remember†in your lyrics seems to help. (There are definitely exceptions, like the aforementioned tune.) Out of this year’s nominees, we’re rooting for “Falling Slowly” from Once, despite the fact that it contains none of these words.
