“Downton Abbey” Left The Manor For The Olympics

The cast of “Downton Abbey” — both upstairs and downstairs — attended the Olympic Opening Ceremony last Friday. They posed for a group shot in front of the stadium, with Mr. Bates in something of a compromised position. But! Where’s the Dowager Countess? You know she wouldn’t dare mingle with the hoi polloi. And speaking of the Countess … the season three promotional cast shot is online, and it features some of the heralded new castmates and a foreboding dark sky (oooh symbolism!). Check it out after the jump!

Woman Leaks Half-Naked Pics Of U.S. Olympic Gymnast Danell Leyva (NSFW)

An anonymous lady decided to share these pics of USA Olympic gymnast Danell Leyva with the world because he allegedly “sorta played” her. She has a fully nude pic of the 20-year-old Miami native as well, but wants to “see how it goes” with these pics first. We’re sorry for this woman’s pain, and we get that she was trying to exact revenge, but really, it’s going pretty well for us. We can’t deny that we’ve thoroughly enjoyed looking at Leyva’s pecs, er, pics. You probably want to look, too. Go ahead. Do it! Spoiler: He wears Hugo Boss boxer briefs, doesn’t wash the chalk off his hands before he masturbates and has a healthy-sized … ego. [Deadspin] Keep reading »

The Art Of The "Jeah"

Gold medal Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is kind of the Brody Jenner of the sport. Which is to say, he’s a total bro, right down to his hella ugly American flag grill, and ubiquitous use of the made up word, “Jeah.” In this helpful video, Lochte explains all the many uses of “Jeah,” and cements his status as a major broseph. Missy Franklin swimmer Olympic gold medalist

Today, The Washington Post ran a column praising 17-year-old Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin as a tenacious athlete. In fact, you could describe columinist Sally Jenkins’ piece as gushing. So it’s unfortunate in an otherwise awe-filled piece that Jenkins’ made a poor choice of words (emphasis mine):

This was her first Olympic gold medal attempt in a grueling program of seven planned events — and on top of that, she had had to swim a semifinal heat in the 200 freestyle less than 15 minutes earlier. But with about 25 meters to go in the backstroke, a mean girl took possession of her.

Whoa, hold up. Why does winning have anything to do with being a “mean girl”? Keep reading »

Ryan Lochte is an Olympic gold medalist. He’s also an inveterate Twitter user/abuser. And man, does he ramble some strange shit. His Twitter paints him as the Olympics’ very own Brody Jenner. A bro of extreme magnitude whose love of Mountain Dew and the word “Jeah” (which signifies everything from “my taxes are astronomical” to “kind sir, would you please remove your boot off my neck”) is well-documented.

He’s also, perhaps, maybe, a terrible speller.

But all of that make his Twitter ramblings highly entertaining and definitely worth a look. That’s why we’ve selected out 11 of our favorite Lochte-isms, for your enjoyment.

18 Olympic Athletes Compete In The Battle Of The Bulge

You know what I love about the Olympics? (Besides the brawn, the insane mastery of skill, and the bringing together of so many countries in a peaceful display of healthy competition, of course.) The clingy, tight, flesh-grazing, aerodynamic fabrics of so many of the uniforms. Yes, that’s what it is…

10 Completely Gratuitous Photos Of French Swim Babe Camille Lacourt

We were a little distracted while watching the men’s swimming this weekend — after we caught sight of total hottie Camille Lacourt. Twenty-seven-year-old Lacourt says on Twitter that he is “Cool, simple and always ready to party: this is what I am.” Sounds pretty great, right? He also happens to be a total whiz at swimming; he was the 2010 European Swimmer of the Year and last night he finished first in the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke. The 100m backstroke final is tonight, so tune in to get a look of this babe in motion. And in the meantime, enjoy our gallery of totally unnecessary Camille shots.

Did This German Dignitary Use A Nazi Salute At The Olympic Opening Ceremony?

Aly's Parents

This is a picture of an unidentified German dignitary greeting his country’s athletes during the Olympic opening ceremony this past weekend. “Tell me that guy wasn’t doing a Nazi salute when the German team came out,” tweeted BBC broadcaster, Richard Gordon. Whether it was a a left-handed Nazi salute (typically done with the right hand during Hitler’s Third Reich) or an antiquated form of the right-arm Olympic wave, onlookers such as Mayor Boris Johnson and Camila Parker-Bowles certainly noticed. The rest of the world noticed as well. It’s hard to interpret the man’s intentions as the video of his “greeting” has been removed from YouTube by the International Olympic Committee. If he was, in fact, attempting a Nazi salute, he may face charges in Germany where the gesture is a criminal offense.

Did anyone else catch this possible gaffe? What was your take? [ONTD]

The Independent Olympic Athletes Are The Cutest Olympic Athletes

Men (And Woman) Without A Country

There’s really no question about who was having the most fun at the Olympics’ Opening Ceremony on Friday: It was clearly the three adorable people representing the Independent Olympic Athletes. Liemarvin Bonevacia, Reginald De Windt and Philipine van Aanholt are all from the Netherlands Antilles, a collection of Caribbean islands that lost its independent statehood in 2010. Three of the islands merged into the Netherlands, while another two are now considered “constituent countries.” Unfortunately, the IOC, the governing body for the Olympics, ruled that the Antilles’ new status made it impossible for them to compete under an independent moniker.

A fourth athlete, marathoner Guor Marial, is competing for South Sudan, a country that just became independent in 2011 and was unable to set up a National Olympic Committee in time. Marial had apparently refused to compete in the Olympics under the Sudan flag, as several members of his family had been killed by the Sudanese regime. A visa problem — Marial trains in the U.S. — prevented him from attending the Opening Ceremony, but he should make it in time for his competition.
