Our favorite character on MTV’s series “The City” was never super saccharine Whitney Port or hyper-villainous Olivia Palermo–it was Elle PR head Erin Kaplan. Kaplan’s side-eye glare and over-boiled frustration said what we all felt about Palermo’s conniving ways. Well, now she’s got a new gig — as head PR honcho at Teen Vogue. Despite the fact that socialite, ahem, we mean, serious fashion journalist for Elle.com, Olivia Palermo was portrayed as the villain on MTV’s “The City,” there’s no denying that the girl has good style. (Hate her all you want, but you know you’d kill for her crazy designer wardrobe.)
Following in the steps of many a socialite before her, Miss Palermo has now transitioned to the role of designer. That is to say, she’s created a mini-collection of bib necklaces. With only five styles, each features a self-tie ribbon closure, flat splatter of beads, and is named after some trendy corner of the world like Tribeca, Le Marais, Mitte (do you know where that is?). And guess what? They come with socialite prices, too. Our verdict: For us normals, cute if you’re not going to pay for it yourself. Oh noes, Whitney Port and Olivia Palermo might have lost their fake jobs! Fashionista.com is reporting that MTV is canceling “The City” after this season. Rumor has it, MTV is booting Palermo off the network because she was cutting into Snooki’s pickle budget. Just kidding! We don’t know why “The City” would be canceled or if the rumor is even true. Frankly, we’re surprised the “Hills” spin-off lasted this long: Whitney Port has always been très boring, non? The only character we’ll miss is Kelly Cutrone, the People’s Revolution fashion PR girl. Thankfully, Kelly’s got her own show, “Kell On Earth,” on Bravo — but considering she’s one of Whitney Eve‘s biggest advocates, this won’t be the last we’ve seen of Whitney yet. By now you’ve probably watched an episode of “The City” or have spent at least 10 seconds wondering why such do-nothing people get their own TV shows. One of those do-nothings is Olivia Palermo, Whitney Port’s “co-worker” at Diane von Furstenberg and her fellow “City” castmate. She’s also who I so lovingly refer to as C-Face, as I think she is possibly one of the most vapidly coniving people every on television. That said, outside of the New York social scene, Olivia is not well-known at all, despite acting as if she’s the bee’s knees. Whitney Port, formerly of “The Hills,” moved to New York a couple months ago to work for designer Diane von Furstenburg. Come Dec. 29, she’s back on MTV in “The City,” which is “The Hills” on the other coast. We hope this doesn’t ruin Whitney for us. She always seemed like the smartest, most-together cast member on “The Hills.” From the short preview above, it seems that Whitney will hang with socialite Olivia Palermo and be fought over by two cute boys.
