Once upon a time, I accidentally gave my email address to The Gap or Banana Republic or Old Navy or some other company vaguely related to those companies, and within a few days my entire inbox was full of really enthusiastic emails about sales and free shipping and new sweaters in stock. I enjoy shopping at all of these stores and do so frequently, but my god, if I wanted to actually read all the emails they send me I would have to quit my job. Sometimes I imagine replying to these emails and telling them how I really feel. This is what that conversation would look like…

Old Navy Gets A Failing Grammar Grade

Old Navy wanted to create a line of sports-enthused tees to pander to fans of virtually any team. So they partnered with SuperFan Nation to create a line of more than 70 tees representing colleges from across the United States. Sounds like a wise marketing move. Except Old Navy made the fatal mistake of not proofreading their T-shirts before sending them into production. Notice anything a bit off about the spirited “Lets Go Dawgs” and “Lets Go Rebels” shirts posted above? Oh that’s right. The shirts are missing an apostrophe on “let’s.” The clothing retailer wouldn’t say whether it bothered going to each university to gain logo approval, but it’s safe to say somebody really dropped the ball. In the meantime, if you’d like to grab a special grammatically incorrect version of your school’s team shirt, act fast. “To ensure Old Navy customers can enjoy this collection fully,” said a statement from the company, “we’re replacing the faulty Ts at our stores and online as soon as possible.” [Daily Mail UK] Keep reading »

As Kim Kardashian plans her televised wedding to Kris Humphries, Reggie has a new lady of his own—model Melissa Molinaro. And she doesn’t just resemble Kim. Old Navy Ad Pokes Fun At Men’s High Fashion

Old Navy ads are usually a bit grating, what with their aggressive musical numbers about sundresses and those obnoxious talking mannequins. But this new one is pretty amazing. In it, male models pose in a bunch of bizarre situations—whilst carrying a sheep, whilst screaming on a couch wearing a vicar’s cap, whilst twirling in a baroque living room—as they whisper the words “Supår Tool” over and over again.   • Kara DioGuardi once ate six pot brownies at Paula Abdul’s house (brought by a friend of Paula’s, she claims!) and got so high she fell out of bed and had to be taken to the hospital, she told “Lopez Tonight.” Yikes. Get The Look: In The Navy

With all of the trends that last five whole seconds, it’s nice to see a designer working with classic color and creating something totally fresh. Giorgio Armani’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection was a sea of navy in many different shades and textures. He mixed chiffon and lace with patent leather, crochet, satin and twill. It is such a wonderfully refined way to subtly play with silhouette that we decided to use one of his looks as inspiration for an outfit you can wear this season. A great thing about a look like this is all of the pieces are ones that can be worn in a myriad of ways. Plus, you probably have half of these garments in your closet already so it will be really easy to reproduce. Don’t like navy? Try this styling idea in browns or grays, using texture and opacity to create interest.

How Do You Feel About Old Navy’s Booty Reader?

This morning, I saw this commercial for Old Navy jeans. In it, a row of women submit their butts to the scrutiny of … the Booty Reader. An Old Navy store has been quasi-converted into a state fair, where the aforementioned Booty Reader is like the old woman fortune teller in a glass case who predicts your future and doles out cards. Only, this time around, the fortune teller is played by one of those Old Navy mannequins, and if you bend over and stick your butt in her face, she issues proclamations about your jeans-clad butt like, “Those Sweetheart jeans make your booty smile from cheek to cheek.” That prompts all the other mannequins to start talking about their smiling booties and “happy booties.” Frankly, I don’t even really get what happens at the end, other than the Booty Reader falls over, I think from being overwhelmed by all the booty talk. When I watch something like this, I always wonder how much the company spent to make it — like, a million bucks, maybe, to come up with the concept? And how many meetings took place in which a group of serious-faced ad people considered all the different ways butts could be discussed in this commercial, including the “happy booty” idea? My butt is frowning over these questions.
