Is This Sexist?

Some say this ad is sexist and offensive, some say it's not. Read More »

Just now, as I was walking to get lunch, I spied a guy with a beautiful huge husky dog walking down 5th Avenue. Because I’m a total dog perv, I was checking the pup out, and then I looked up at the guy, and realized he was wearing what I thought was a Hello Kitty shirt. How cute, I thought. But then I looked closer: It said “Hello Titty.” And no, this guy wasn’t some overgrown frat boy just out of high school — this was a solidly middle-aged man, wearing a ridiculous Hello Kitty parody shirt. This is fucked up for a number of reasons — the fact that Hello Kitty is fairly well marketed to young girls and women, to start. But also? This guy should be ashamed of wearing something so ridiculously sexist and inappropriate in public (and also, not very clever). So yes, feminism, meet (one of) your (many) reasons to exist.

Do Not Want: Kill Yourself And Die Necklace

We did a double take upon seeing this necklace sold by Colette, which reads “Kill yourself and die.” (It also comes with a piece of artwork with the same slogan.) If there’s a reference to something here, we’re missing it. If there’s an artistic explanation, we’re not seeing it in the product description. Either way, we’re not sure anything could ameliorate the message of what seems to be essentially a piece of pro-suicide jewelry. [Colette] Keep reading »

Was Miley’s “Tribal” Performance At The Much Music Awards Offensive?

Finally, some Miley Cyrus news that doesn’t have to do with Perez Hilton and her vajayjay!

Miley performed her new song “Can’t Be Tamed” at the MuchMusic Awards in Toronto this weekend, but not everyone is happy with the performance. Some blogs say the tiki torches, her backup dancers’ tribal-looking face paint, and the part where she looks like she’s being dragged on a stick (say, like a wild boar?) is offensive to aboriginal cultures. MTV Publicists May Be Getting Death Threats Over “Jersey Shore”!

You didn’t have to be Italian to be horrified by “Jersey Shore,” MTV’s new reality show about a summer share house in the Garden State—it’s exactly what you would expect from the eight trashiest 20-somethings they could find, complete with free-flowing alcohol, macho posturing and dumbass nicknames.

But it certainly didn’t matter that producers edited the show so the slurs “guido” and “guidette” appear about 127 times in the very first episode. Unsurprisingly, New York magazine now reports MTV’s publicists are receiving friggin’ death threats, apparently from angry Italian-Americans. Keep reading »

“Sexy” Nativity Scene In Shop Window Pisses Off L.A.

The people of Los Angeles have their panties in a knot after Madison, a clothing store on Robertson Boulevard, scoffed at good taste and depicted a “sexy nativity scene” in their store windows. The Virgin Mary lies in the hay with her legs provocatively posed, the baby Jesus sits nestled in her lap, and the pair is surrounded by wise men. All are wearing items from the store, of course! “The way they have presented Mary in a very provocative position with a baby in her crotch, and that baby is supposed to be Jesus … no,” said one woman who complained to KTLA-TV.
