World’s Fattest Mother Wants To Become World’s Fattest Woman

Wouldn’t life be liberating if you never had to worry about what you ate for fear of packing on the pounds or destroying your health? For Donna Simpson of New Jersey, life is that great. You see, Donna already weighs 602 pounds and has held the Guinness World Record for world’s fattest mom since 2007, when she gave birth to her daughter Jacqueline during a high-risk Caesarean procedure. But she wants to gain 400 more pounds so her total weight will be at least 1,000 pounds. Then, Donna might hold the record for world’s fattest woman. Donna, who wears a size XXXXXXXL, can’t go more than 20 feet without sitting down, and needs a mobility scooter to go shopping, consumes 12,000 calories a day to reach her goal. And as you guessed it, vegetables aren’t on the menu, although sushi is her favorite food. Donna makes her money through a website in which male admirers pay to watch while she consumes fast food. Her food bill is $750 a week. Yet Donna insists she’s healthy and her weight gain goals won’t be harmful. “I love eating and people love watching me eat,” she said to the Daily Mail. “It makes people happy, and I’m not harming anyone.” [Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Voters Prefer Male Politicians Tubby And Female Politicians Slim

Hey ladies, if you’re planning on running for office, a new study shows that you’d better hit the gym. But dudes, start packing in the burgers because apparently people prefer their male politicians on the fatter side. Once again we women get screwed. Voters are allegedly under the impression that chubby male politicians are more reliable, honest, dependable, and capable of dealing with stress. Meanwhile, they believe the opposite of female counterparts. Thanks for the additional pressure. Not that I was going to run for office, but it’s always a nice reminder that people prefer their womenfolk svelte. Keep reading »

No Fatties: College Won’t Let Obese Students Graduate

Essentially putting a “No Fatties” sign on the Admissions office, Lincoln University in Pennsylvania has taken a rather radical step in addressing obesity. They’re requiring that every student with a body mass index of 30 or higher, which is in the obese range, take a fitness class three times a week. Those who fail to show up won’t graduate. It’s easy to say it’s for their own good, but does a university have the right to withhold a diploma for someone’s lifestyle choices? The administration says, “Obesity is going to rob you of your quality and quantity of life. We believe that this is unconscionable.” But what about students who’re heavy drinkers, bulimics, cocaine users, smokers, or fans of unprotected sex? Aren’t those people risking their quality of life? Maybe they shouldn’t graduate unless they take a class? Keep reading »

U.K. Hospital Won’t Deliver Overweight Women’s Babies

A hospital in the U.K. has some overweight mothers-to-be outraged. Weston General Hospital will refuse to deliver babies to pregnant women with a body mass index of 34 or more. That roughly equates a woman who is 5’6” and weighs about 210 pounds. Their reasoning behind what many women are calling discrimination? Mothers with a high BMI are at risk for bleeding and severe labor complications. They will send these mothers to another hospital 20 miles away with a more hi-tech maternity ward. This all sounds shady to me. The last thing any woman in labor needs is to: a) be told she’s fat and b) to take a full-on road trip to deliver her baby. Sounds like Weston General Hospital needs to upgrade their freaking maternity ward. But what do you think? Is this discrimination or a step forward in the war on obesity? [Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Frisky Rant: Enough Already With The Reality TV Weight Loss Shows!

Just when I thought no one could exploit her struggle with weight any more than Carnie Wilson, Kirstie Alley is fat again and eager to capitalize on it. Rumor has it that she signed on to do a reality show on A&E about her struggle to lose weight. I wonder if it will air in the same time slot as Carnie’s show, “Unstapled”? And I wonder what it will be called—my best guesses are “Tipping The Scale” and “Really Fat Actress.” Inner grimace. Inner groan. Keep reading »

Fat Is Fabulous In Mauritania

Yesterday, Oprah Winfrey discussed beauty rituals and standards around the world on her talk show. I had no idea Iran was the “nose job capital of the world,” but I was really shocked that Mauritanian women don’t want to be thin. Plump is sexy for women there, but men are expected to be thin. Thick ankles, chubby arms, and a big butt are considered the most beautiful parts of a woman in this West African nation. Men even like stretch marks! Thin women are thought of as being sickly. But don’t move to Mauritania just yet because this beauty ideal has its own flaws. Keep reading »

168-Pound 5-Year-Old Is Eating Herself To Death

Suman Khatun weights 168 pounds even though she’s only five years old and three and a half feet tall. Doctors suspect she suffers from a hormone imbalance, like a malfunctioning pituitary gland, but since her family can’t afford to take her to Calcutta for expert treatment, no one knows for sure. Her family earns slightly less than $10 per week, so her appetite could literally eat them out of house and home. In one week, she consumes about 22 pounds of rice, 24 eggs, six liters of milk, and about 11 pounds of potatoes. When Suman, who also has trouble breathing because of her weight, isn’t fed, her mother says she screams, cries, and has even thrown rocks at her family. She’s also been known to sneak out and beg food from neighbors in her village. A local doctor first noticed her problem when she was three months old, but by the time she was two she already weighed 98 pounds. She has gained about 33 pounds every year after that. The doctor can only treat her symptoms, he says, because he doesn’t have the proper diagnostic treatment, but he fears Suman will die if she doesn’t stop over-eating or get medical attention. Is It Dangerous to Have a Skinny Fat Mindset?

In her Newsweek blog “Confessions of a Skinny Fat Person: Let the Fat Wars Begin,” Kate Dailey reveals her annoying skinny fat mindset about weight and its relationship to health. For those of you that don’t know what a “skinny fat” is, it’s a person who is skinny on the outside and fat on the inside. You know…that person with great genes who looks great in their jeans no matter how many bags of Doritos they eat. Because Kate appears to be skinny (she tells us more than once that her ass looks good), that has somehow qualified her to write about obesity and health for Newsweek. After reading “Lessons From the Fat-O-Sphere,” being introduced to the fat acceptance movement, and discovering that her body fat was 30% (critically high), she felt like a fraud. And the true question finally dawned on her “is it about weight or about health?” Duh. It’s about health. And then she realized how much this country hates fat people. Again…duh. Keep reading »

The Key To Your Waistline: Your Mother’s

Wondering who to blame for your battle with the scale? Your same-gender parent—in other words, your mom if you’re a chick and your dad if you’re a dude. A study has found that overweight mothers are ten times more likely to have obese daughters, and tubby fathers are six times more likely to have portly sons. So why is this finding so interesting? Because it suggests that it’s not straight genetics that determine your girth—it’s more likely learned behavior. Fascinating, no? [News AU] Keep reading »
