It’s always bittersweet when New York Fashion Week comes to a close. On one hand, editors and Fashion People citywide breathe a sigh of relief (not to mention regular people who just so happen to live near Lincoln Center); on the other hand, it significantly diminishes your chances of stealing a glimpse at Carine Roitfeld on 64th Street or spotting Karlie Kloss on the subway. Oh well, there’s always next season… or London, starting tomorrow. Finishing off NYFW Autumn/Winter 2013, we’ve got Naeem Khan, Oscar de la Renta, J. Mendel, Marchesa, Proenza Schouler, and Ralph Lauren…

If I had to choose one word to describe the outrageous nails seen backstage at New York Fashion Week, it would have to be frightening. Sure there were the typical dark and moody manicures painted in fall colors like burgundy, green and black. However, the dagger-like digits models sported at most of the shows looked like they came straight out of a scary movie.
CND co-founder Jan Arnold took this theme to the extreme at The Blonds with nail art inspired by classic horror flicks like “The Shining” and “Psycho” — using mini Jack Nicholson and Janet Leigh screaming face prints. Miss Pop, a Manhattan-based nail artist, was tapped to create a spooky set of black and white ombre nails at Katie Gallagher. And even Kate Spade’s colorful fall collection got a terrifying touch with pyramid studded claws. Read more…
Julie: So Johnny Galliano, eh? THAT GUY.
Rachel: Old Johnny that scoundrel.
Julie: We haven’t really heard much from him. Then last week, Oscar de la Renta offered him a residency. And this week? He shows up at the Oscar de la Renta show dressed as a Hassidic Jew. Keep reading »
Amazingly, Fashion People were undeterred by the foot-plus of snow we received this weekend, and New York Fashion Week carried on as usual. Total champs — we certainly can’t say the same about our weekend, which we spent contained safely indoors in front of the television. This is just a small selection from the many, many incredible shows that took place over the weekend and into this week. Let’s see what Alexander Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Victoria Beckham, Derek Lam, Zac Posen, and Marc by Marc Jacobs have in mind for the Autumn/Winter 2013 season… Keep reading »
Get an “at the show” look at the new DKNY Fall 2013 collection in this awesome video, featuring Shay Mitchell, Victoria Justice and Ms. DKNY herself, Donna Karan. Probably the next best thing to going to the show, we say. Viva la NYFW!
Time to give credit where credit is due: while the rest of New York City hid indoors during Blizzard Nemo, the fashion industry went forward with Fashion Week as planned. The tents have never seen so many pairs of Sorel boots! Let’s see what designers Christian Siriano, Mara Hoffman, Jason Wu, Jill Stuart, rag & bone, and Rebecca Minkoff sent down the runway for Fall 2013. Keep reading »
New York is currently dealing with an impending mega-blizzard storm. Sure that’s concerning to us regular New Yorkers, but more importantly, what’s this gonna mean for New York Fashion Week? Already, Marc Jacobs has cancelled his show Friday evening with many other designers sure to follow suit. But in the meantime, as we bite our nails about the fate of future shows, we took a look back at a few of our favorite shows from the first two days of NYFW. Click through and critically pour over them, will you? Keep reading »
Carine Roitfeld recently bemoaned the exclusivity of fashion shows, revealing her own opinion that young people who love fashion should be able to see it. (In fact, it’s this very conviction that drives her to take two spectators in with her each time she goes to see a show — so cute!) It’s true: you’ve got to have Notoriety with a capital “N” (for nepotism, of course) to land your lucky self an invite to Fashion Week. While it sure doesn’t beat being personally escorted by the former EIC of French Vogue, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week partner IMG has offered us Regular Folk a new in at the events this year by teaming up with online video platform Rightster to host streaming video of the runway. More than half of the shows in New York this season, which begins today and ends the 14th, will be available to watch both live and on-demand afterward, should you happen to miss your favorite. You can find the full list of shows, dates, and times, complete with links to the live stream, here at International Business Times.
Now that Paris Fashion Week is winding down, we can reflect back on the weeks and weeks of runway shows, designer spotlights and trend forecasting. But before we close the chapter entirely on the Spring/Summer 2013 season, let’s take a look at some of the bizarre headwear that made its way down the runway this past month.
Fake glasses or spectacles are the easiest fashion fix there is. Yesterday, after three meetings before 11 a.m. my fake specs came to the rescue when I dashed over to NYFW in the afternoon. Out of the door at 7:30 a.m. meant my hair was limp and clothes creased, but I felt brainy, busy and bright in my glasses. Looking round at the shows too, my guess is I am not the only one faking it.
Earlier this year, my optician made up some Hackett black-rimmed glasses for me — with clear lenses. They are similar to, but larger than my prescription readers and I love them. All through my last year at high school I wore a pair of glasses I had lied to my optician to get. They gave me a terrible headache, but looked great. Now, when I feel like being anonymous but it’s too dark for sunglasses, on go my fakes. Read more …
