OK, sure, I think we all know what the resounding answer is. But how out of touch are they? New York Times Fashion & Style writer Cintra Wilson has been catching an internet’s worth of flack lately regarding an article she penned about the new J.C. Penney store, which has just opened in midtown Manhattan. Now, anyone who’s ever tentatively stepped a Lanvin-clad flat a few miles outside of New York City knows that a J.C. Penney store opening is nothing to write home about, but, apparently, it’s a big huge deal in a town filled with Pradas and Chanels and Louis Vuittons. Not surprisingly, Wilson found little to like about the store, which she referred to as a “dowdy Middle American entity.” When she couldn’t find anything in her size, which is “2,” she delivered a shocker. The New York Times just wrote about how certain fancy-pants destinations have their own locals-only (or those in the know) T-shirt hierarchy. Most recognizable example: the Black Dog shirt from the Martha’s Vineyard tavern of the same name. As I read about the various East and Southampton and Sag Harbor T-shirts, all I could think was that it feels like I’m back in high school and playing the old game of who had the newest, best, most unavailable T-shirt. The “Ditch Witch” tee (preferred by the Montauk elite) is almost akin to going to a Phish or Dave Matthews concert and buying the $40 tee —but never, ever wearing it at the concert in question—back in the day. (Well, in the little corner of tiny-town-ville of Long Island where I existed, anyways.) Bonus points for the H.O.R.D.E. Fest or other all-day musical extravaganza. And the only sartorially ruinous circumstance? Everyone else having the T-shirt, too. Which I guess is kind of the point of this otherwise pointless newspaper article. We’ve all had those eyebrow accidents where something goes wrong with the wax, or you go pluck-crazy and are left with a teensy row of hairs above your eyes. What if those “accidents” started happening on purpose? In an article that reads more like an April Fool’s joke than serious journalism, The New York Times reports that the latest beauty trend is razed eyebrows. Yes, as in no brows. I love to read the wedding section in The New York Times — it truly is the sports section for women, or the sports section for people with an interest in giggling over the cheesiness of strange couples and schmaltzy writing. Take the wedding announcement for the lovely couple, Tess Taylor and Taylor Schreiner (ZOMG, what if he took HER last name?), which had numerous passages that gave me a good guffaw today:
“Her family has a ramshackle seaside cottage in Maine filled with water-stained furniture and damp books whose pages fall out as easily as the leaves of an overcooked artichoke.”
